Morning Tweet: Et tu, Indians fans?

Jun 14, 2010, 9:00 AM EDT

Wow. Here are the photos, and the story, from D.C. Sports Bog.

Every item in the store was apparently some form of Strasburg apparel. MASN’s Byron Kerr reported that by the sixth inning, the booth had sold out of Strasburg jerseys in sizes medium and large. The Indians also announced a crowd of 32,876, only the second time they’ve gone above 26,000 all season. (The other was Opening Day.)

There’s only one other D.C. athlete who has caused anything approaching this sort of frenzy away from home. And while Strasburg isn’t generating Alex Ovechkin-type mobs of autograph seekers, photographers and frenzied fans, I’m not sure Ovechkin has ever inspired an entire merchandise stand in an away venue.

I suppose Michael Jordan moved a lot of jerseys at opposing arenas in his heyday, but an entire booth devoted to him in, say, Boston Garden or Detroit? Can’t imagine that. What other athlete ever approached Strasburg’s level of merchandising hype? There weren’t lines this long for the new iPhone.
And if these photos aren’t an advertisement to keep interleague play, nothing is.
“I’m pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But as you see it’s a beautiful day, the beaches are open and people are having a wonderful time. Monday as you know means friendship.”
