Wrigley Field's new Toyota sign not warmly recieved by Chicagoans

Jun 12, 2010, 4:00 PM EDT

toyota.jpgWhen an article in the Chicago Tribune is entitled, “New Toyota sign at Wrigley: As ugly as the Cubs’ season,” it is a pretty good indicator that the new addition to the historic ballpark did not make a good first impression.
In a post on Cityscapes blog, writer Blair Kamin pulls no punches when he articulates his displeasure with the physical embodiment of the Cubs’ newest corporate partner, which was only just approved on Wednesday. To wit:

The sign’s assorted parts create a whole that is glaringly vertical, rudely interrupting the nearly continuous horizontal sweep of the bleachers that was supposed to be protected by Wrigley’s official city landmark status. Shame on the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, the appointed guardians of Chicago’s historic treasures, for approving the sign. All the commission’s staff did was perfume the pig, insisting on tweaks, like replacing internal illumination for the sign with small projecting light fixtures that mimic those on Wrigley’s centerfield scoreboard.

Jeez. How do you really feel about the sign, Mr. Kamin? Don’t hold back. While I understand that Wrigley Field is treated as hallowed ground and is heavily romanticized by Chicagoans, it’s still just a stupid sign, right?

Yes, how dare they put in a sign and taint such a prestigious ballpark where so many championships have been won…. wait.

There is only one reason it’s there… MONEY! If you don’t like the sign, just pay more than TOYOTA did and buy they space yourself. Capitalism at it’s finest.
