Mankind has failed at many, many things over the centuries, but infidelity has never been one of them. We’ve been having affairs since approximately three hours after the institution of marriage was invented, and perfected it with the introduction of Holiday Inn Express. So why do we need a web site like Ashley Madison.com, which caters to folks looking for extra-marital shenanigans? Well, because of stunts like this, which if nothing else are entertaining. Ashley Madison has announced that it is offering $25 million for the naming rights to the new Meadowlands Stadium. I propose Hanky-Panky Field, but we can work out the details later.
AM founder Noel Biderman sent a letter to the CEO at New Meadowlands — obtained by TMZ — declaring, “At this stage, we are prepared to make a preliminary offer … of $25,000,000 for the Naming Rights for a five-year term.”
He adds, if the stadium gets better offers, “We would be pleased to match any such superior offer.”
The offer (which works out to $5M a year) is pretty big, but it’s still below the average for other stadium sponsorships — Bank of America pays $7M a year to sponsor the Carolina Panthers stadium and FedEx drops $7.6 a year on the Redskins stadium in D.C.
Yes, this is nothing more than a naked publicity grab; and that’s a game that Ashley Madison plays well. CEO Noel Biderman, a former attorney and sports agent, realizes that the publicity surrounding the naming rights offer would be huge, and mostly free, since there’s no way his offer would be accepted. It’s the same strategy he used earlier this year with this rejected Super Bowl commercial.
Then again, the Ashley Madison logo on that phallic-looking sign above would be perfect marketing.
