Make no mistake: Manny the Manatee hates oil spills. Not only because the manatee is a wetlands-dwelling sea creature, and would be impacted physically if the Gulf Oil Spill reaches his shores. But killing the ocean means people losing jobs, and that means fewer people attending Minor League Baseball games. So to protest the culprits in this disaster, the Manatees are scrubbing the initials BP from their everyday routine. The team is changing the name of their daily batting practice — or BP — to “hitting rehearsal.”
“As an organization, we feel that changing the term ‘batting practice’ and ‘BP’ to ‘hitting rehearsal’ shows that we are deeply concerned and hurt by the disaster on the Gulf coast,” Manatees General Manager Kyle Smith said in a press release.
“We hope to send a message to the community that we are definitely worried with the pollution that is in the waters off the Gulf Coast and its potential impact on the beaches here in Brevard County.”
For the record, Brevard County is on the Atlantic side of Florida, so the oil slick would have to do some fancy maneuvering to get over there. But manatees have little or no access to maps.

Guess what Rick? That’s exactly where the prediction model says it will go!
