MMA fighter accused of ripping heart from guy who was still alive (yikes)

May 28, 2010, 6:45 PM EDT

Was mixed martial arts cage fighter Jarrod Wyatt high on some sort of wacky mushroom concoction — or clinically insane, as his attorney may contend — when he allegedly murdered his friend in horrific fashion earlier this month? A pre-trial hearing is now underway in Eureka, Calif., for Wyatt, who at least one witness says killed his friend Taylor Powell, 21, at a home outside of Klamath on March 21, by tearing out his heart while Powell was still breathing. This gets even more graphic, if you can believe it. So keep your Alvin Gentry sickness bag handy if you click below.

Wyatt has had one MMA fight, which he won, according to MixedMartialArts.com. From The Eureka Times-Standard:

The man, Justin Davis, had been there earlier in the day and saw Wyatt acting strangely after drinking “some kind of mushroom tea,” according to the statement. Davis left for Crescent City, but returned later to pick up his dog. Davis arrived to find Wyatt standing in the living room naked and covered with blood, according to the statement. Wyatt told Davis, according to the statement, that he was going to cut out Powell’s heart. Davis went to a nearby pay phone to call law enforcement.

A deputy arrived at the residence and reportedly saw Wyatt on the couch with Powell’s body, which was covered in blood and had most of its face removed. A large incision in the chest could be seen, and other unspecified body parts had been removed. An eyeball was resting in the middle of the room, according to the statement.

Wyatt allegedly told the deputy that he’d cut Powell’s heart out and thrown it into the fire.

Powell’s death certificate reads that he died from having his heart removed while he was still alive, causing him to bleed to death. It also lists as significant blunt force trauma to the head and neck, and compression of the neck.

Now I’ve read Last of the Mohicans as many times as you have, but this is still pretty gruesome. And I have no idea why this story isn’t all over my TV 24/7. Just glad it isn’t.

This is not about the devil, the battle of good vs. evil, or any other hyper-religious crap. It’s about a sick kid, bad parenting, a girl, and some macho *****holes trying to act all tough to impress this Billy Jo girlfriend of his. Wyatt is using “the devil made me do it” bs in an attempt to get an insanity defense. Was he insane or perhaps just insanely jealous and felt he had to prove something to his gf? So many stories from people in CC, CA are about people who say they knew Wyatt, that he was a nice guy, feel sorry for him, etc. What a crock. Excuses like he was on psychedelic mushrooms, or methamphetamine, or whatever. These people are extremely desensitized to what normal looks like. They are living in a dysfunctional la la land where methamphetamine parties are a regular every day event, like going to the arcade was for me when I was a kid. The troubled youth of my generation made the mistake of thinking having their own kids would give them a chance to correct the mistakes of their parents. Only now do they truly see the error in their thinking. The cycle now includes extreme neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, drug abuse, methamphetamine abuse, all mixed up with sheer stupidity. These dysfunctional people are like having bubble gum stuck on your shoe, it’s hard to get it off, its sticky, and picks up all kind of debris along the way. Wyatt’s lucky he’s made it this far considering the explosiveness of his actions. It’s not likely he would have or could have been helped even if he had wanted any help to begin with. At least now, he will be given justice, a long life sentence, or perhaps the death penalty. With the extremity of his actions, there could be no other reaction. Insane or not, he’s fatally flawed. Permanently damaged beyond repair. His surrounding influences themselves fatally flawed in that they couldn’t come close to helping him either. He was doomed from the start. There are people that say they love him or care about him, but anyone who might have cared or loved him would have recognized a long time ago that he desperately needed help, much more help than he was getting. Smoking pot, drinking psychedelic mushroom tea, doing methamphetamine, drinking alcohol, and other self-medications are dangerous business. It’s called denial. Defending the behavior is called arrogance and justifying the behavior is called enabling. People, get a life. Stop denying your mental illnesses, take some responsibility, and seek professional, studied, emperically-based solutions to your mental problems, so that when your “friends” end up thinking that drinking psychedelic mushroom tea, alcohol, or any other illegal drugs is a good idea, you can help them realize otherwise.

This is seriously sick. When I first read this story, I thought it must be a joke. If only he had done this in Texas. They fry people like that in Texas.

i grew up with both of these kids in crescent city.
it’s crazy how different the word of mouth story is than the published one…
but nonetheless, Wyatt is a fuck, me and him were dating two sisters at one point and he freaked me out, and that was like 8 years ago.
Taylor was a good guy, and it’s truly terrible that something like this would have to happen to ANYONE. I think about him and pray for him a lot.
