Morning Tweet: Game of a lifetime

May 14, 2010, 9:30 AM EDT

Great story today by Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times about John Sikorra, a high school senior who has a rare neurodegenerative disorder known as Batten disease. Blind since childhood, Sikorra grew to love baseball in part by listening to Vin Scully call Dodgers games, and it was his dream to one day earn a varsity letter in the sport. Sikorra, who had been an honorary member of the Chaminade High team all season, got his chance on Thursday as the top-ranked Southern Section squad gave up an out in a game against Alemany High so he could have an honorary at-bat. Hitting off a tee, Sikorra pounded one to left, and guided by his dad, Joe Sikorra, rounded the bases to much fanfare.
The coach of the opposing team, Randy Johnson, summed up the situation best: “Some things are bigger than baseball.”
I don’t know what the problem is, but I’m sure it can be solved without resorting to Friday.

TODAY IN MARK TRAIL
Weary of traipsing the backcountry to tell us about interesting animals, lazy Mark Trail mails one in on the common wren.
