Cleveland celebrities gather for heartrending 'We Are LeBron' tribute video

May 14, 2010, 12:00 PM EST

The worst part of getting dumped is always the inevitable groveling, which is the phase the City of Cleveland is going through right now. The difference is, while your drunken, weepy phone call to your ex will go largely unnoticed by the general public, Cleveland’s pain is now on display for all the word to see, in video form. Sad, really. Poor dopes.
Just as We Are the World completely ended world hunger, this video — We Are LeBron — will ultimately convince the NBA superstar to forgo New York (or wherever) and stay in Sixth City. On May 3, a dizzying array of local Cleveland talent gathered to record the video, including NASL great Otto Orf, and the great Carl Monday!
Sample lyrics: Just tell us King, what changes we must make, We’ll rename every street ‘LeBron’ if that’s what it takes….
Now, that’s groveling.

Break Media’s Mike Polk, a lifelong Cavs fan and creator of The Cleveland Tourism videos, is responsible for the creation, actually a pretty good parody in my opinion. Plus, a great comment on the celebrity lineup by the publicity spokesperson who sent me the video:

“We’re pretty excited about it, but sad that Betty White, who planned to be there, couldn’t make it due to her superstardom.”

    Oh ,BROTHERS!!!
    and YES WE CAN

Just another little jealous ignorant IQ challenged fool from a small market city…Don’t you realize that your opinions don’t matter, only opinions that matter are ones from the Greatest City in the World, and the Greatest most knowledgeable fans in the World, New York Fans. Hell, if I wanted to hear your opinion, I wouldv’ve beat it outta of you…That’s just the way here in New York you little insignificant nothing!

  3. Cones - May 14, 2010 at 8:35 PM

If you’re going to talk trash, at least sound intelligent. All of your assertions are based on the fact that New York is the “greatest city in the world”, which is objective. Plenty of people take location into account when making decisions, not to mention financial benefits. What can NYC provide that other cities cannot? Why go from one perennially losing franchise to another?

  4. and why am I a fan? - May 14, 2010 at 8:41 PM

I think what this game should teach us all is that we do not matter, it’s not about the fans or the city. If it were certain players would not have thrown the game. It’s all about them, their $ and the big business that is professional sports. We like to think that they care about us fans who spend our hard earned money and lose sleep staying up late to watch these games but the truth is that the players could care less about us poor working folk.

  5. CraigInCt - May 14, 2010 at 8:56 PM

Ryan: I was not referencing the video (and maybe I should have been clear on that fact). I know the video is a parody (or joke).
I was referring to the Cleveland fans, and the media simply trashing this guy for not leading the Cavs to a championship. Granted that I don’t listen to Cleveland radio stations, but from what I read online and heard on New York Sports radio, Cleveland gave up on Lebron due to the outcome of one series against the Celtics. He put the Cavs on the map, and will probably remove them from that same map with his departure.
Maybe Lebron was leaving Cleveland no matter how this season ended, but you gotta think that the fans and media just made his decision a whole lot easier.
I guarantee you that where ever he lands, that team will win a lot more games than the Cavs next year.

what about all the booing a week ago?

Hold on there CT – I’m thinking that maybe your chosen reading material may not be a completely well-rounded, both sides of the spectrum, pro/con material that it probably should be – I’m sure I speak for the entire city of Cleveland (maybe except for a few cynical stragglers) when I say nobody wants to see LBJ pack up and leave town only to return to his hometown in the off-season. To fully understand the depth of this city’s devotion to its sports teams is not something you can grasp by simply reading an article written by the wildly, antagonistic reporter who makes it his passion to strike and sear into his readers’ brains HIS idea or take on any happening in the sports world, while all the time knowing that what he’s truly accomplishing is only the ‘knock ‘em down’ pasttime that has become all too common in all forms of media. Cleveland is a great city with an unprecedented sports tradition. Is it the Grand Champion of all sports meccas with consistent championships/superstars ala NY, LA, etc? We don’t kid ourselves here and we certainly know what that answer is. However, it’s the tradition of this hard-working, blue-collar town that translates to and forms these die-hard fans into always believing until the very end – until we are forced to utter those all too familiar words, ‘there’s always next year.’ And when next year does come, us “short-sighted” people will trek thru the early Spring blizzard and file into the Jake on Opening Day only to have the game “snowed out.” And then with complete disregard for team/league standings or playoff hopes/aspirations, we, the same “short-sighted” people will also spend every Sunday afternoon from September thru New Years’ cheering on one of the greatest, most storied franchises in football history where the only place you can find a ticket is if you go face to face with the vulture-like scalpers trolling outside of Browns’ Stadium. And when October rolls around, we “short-sighted” people will faithfully show up to support our Central Division Champions. Sure we wished and certainly hoped the new season would begin with the raising of the first ever World Championship banner for Cleveland in 46 years. So yes, we’re disappointed – who wouldn’t be?
LBJ has some decisions to make – does he want more money? Does he want more prestige? Will leaving this town make it easier for him to be a champion? He will have to determine those things. But you see CT, the one thing he doesn’t have to measure or determine is the love this city has for this man or the size of the heart of the people he’s played for during the last 7 years. He already knows how we feel because he IS one of us.

  8. Say what - May 15, 2010 at 11:20 PM

Yeah and Chicago didn’t live on MJ? Chicago acted like it was their 911 when MJ went to baseball.

  9. Emily - May 17, 2010 at 7:48 AM

Speaking as a person from Cleveland, CraigInCt, you are wrong, because even though we didn’t win the championship, no one in Cleveland is blaming LeBron, at all. In fact, most Clevelanders that you talk to don’t even care that we lost. We’re over it, we just want LeBron to stay.

  10. dub - May 17, 2010 at 11:33 AM

    Lebron is a douche,
    and Cleveland’s desperate,
    Their shooting’s cold,… See More
    Shaq is old,
    And they’ll never win it.
    They call him King,
but he never won a Ring.
    And soon Nike will see,
    He will always be
Kissing the feet of the Great KOBE!
    So forget LeBron,
    He’s just faker,
and not half as good as any Laker!!!!
    LET’S GO LAKERS!!! 2010 CHAMPS!!!

  11. Delonte W - May 18, 2010 at 12:25 AM

Hey morons who can’t comprehend parody: when they made this video they weren’t doing it because their main objective was to convince or “beg” LeBron to stay in Cleveland. If that was their main purpose, do you really think they would’ve put stuff in the song like “You’re saving our downtown”?
Do you really believe the average Cleveland citizen – or any Clevelander, for that matter – honestly is walking around thinking that downtown Cleveland will be “ruined” if LeBron James leaves?
Come on folks, let’s use our brains a little bit. I think it’s hilarious how many people online watch this video and write “Oh my god, I can’t believe how pathetic the people in Cleveland and in this video are.” Hey geniuses, if this was a serious attempt to sway LeBron, do you also think there would be a subtitle under one of the “singers” that reads “Intimidating TV Lawyer”?
The other thing is, they made the video on May 3, before they knew the outcome of the Cavs’ season. For all they knew, people might see this video after the Cavs won the championship in the NBA Finals, not after a disappointing second-round defeat to Boston. People act like they just threw this video together because they are panicking in Cleveland that LeBron may leave, when in fact the video was made before anyone knew how the playoffs would unfold.

  12. A Yahoo User - May 18, 2010 at 5:17 PM

Well, if he was ever thinking about staying, I think it’s safe to say that after he hears this “song” and sees the video, he will never come back to Cleveland. How lame can you get? Pathetic.

  13. Reality Check - May 18, 2010 at 8:57 PM

FYI New York douche bags: There are a million ways that New Yorkers have been falling all over themselves trying to get LeBron. And they have been doing this for the past 3 years! Talk about pathetic.

  14. Craig - May 19, 2010 at 12:47 PM

This will really help Lebron make up his mind. I am sure when Lebron addresses the media he will mention that it was his desire for a championship and this song that pushed him over the edge to come back to Cleveland. I hope he can separate the song from his desire to bring a championship to Cleveland. Shameful.

  15. Sportschump - May 20, 2010 at 10:52 AM

Not sure whether this video will get him to stay or leave.

Was there actually a person up top who commented who’s log in name is “Ted Williams Head?” Very nicely done, sir.
I’ll be visiting your site shortly

I never respond to any type of blogs or comment sections online, but after seeing this video and reading this post, I wanted to tell you how spot on you are. For the Cleveland haters on here, reading this describes exactly how this town truly appreciates their sports teams, and the “theres always next year” line has come to be our city’s motto. However, like you said, we are always around next year, always supportive, and always loyal. LeBron grew up in Akron, as did I. He knows what its like to be a Cleveland fan and he loves this town. Thank you for this post, hopefully the ignorant NY fans on here will get a clue.
