Morning Tweet: Dispatches from Mother's Day

May 10, 2010, 9:00 AM EDT

That’s the thing about baseball; sometimes the script plays out perfectly, as if Frank Morgan is behind a curtain working steam-powered levers. You all know the story by now: Alex Rodriguez and Dallas Braden feud, Braden responds by throwing perfect game against the Rays. A-Rod’s “15 minutes of fame” quote is upstaged by Braden’s grandmother, as seen to the right. On Mother’s Day. If we’ve learned nothing else from this episode, hopefully we’ve learned this:
1. Don’t engage in a war of words with underclassmen. This was a no-win situation for A-Rod. He had the high ground in this “feud” by virtue of his resume, and should have kept silent. His “15 minutes” quote lowered him into an argument he didn’t need, and he got burned.
2. Trying to break up a perfect game with a bunt in the fifth inning? That’s a little desperate. Jesus, Longoria, your team has the best record in baseball. Play like it.
3. My favorite Rodriguez nicknames from the Out of Bounds comments section: Ahole-Rod, El Douchebag.
4. Yankees at Athletics, July 5-7. That first A-Rod at-bat vs. Braden is going to be interesting.
Your powers are weak, old man. You’ll never escape Monday alive.
