As we learned last night, Eric Byrnes, recently released by the Seattle Mariners, promptly signed with the slightly-less prestigious Dutch Goose C League softball squad in Menlo Park, Calif. Because I’m all about investigative reporting, and happened to be a couple of miles from the Dutch Goose (also I was thirsty), I drove over there earlier today and took this photo. This is Byrnes’ home team now; a beer and burger joint near his home town of Portola Valley.
Actually he played his debut game for The Goose at nearby Nealon Park on Wednesday night. I’m not sure how he did, but his team won.
“We’ve actually had a couple of calls from people asking for a schedule,” Greg Stern, who has owned the Dutch Goose for five years, told me today. “They want to see him play. I was at the game last night, but there wasn’t a big crowd because I don’t think anyone knew he was there. That will probably change for the next game.”
About that: There are men’s league games at Nealon Park on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Good bet he’ll be there Sunday if you want to stop by.
“Eric is a great guy, really down to earth,” said Stern. “It was great hearing he’d be back in the area. My first thought was, finally our team might start winning some games.”

Fear The Goose.
