Hoo boy, that ain't good: Joe Mauer's injured heel worse than expected
May 2, 2010, 12:45 PM EDT
Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, appearing on Twins flagship station ESPN 1500 earlier this morning, said the injured heel Mauer suffered trying to beat out a grounder while running to first base during the second inning of the Twins’ 9-3 victory over Cleveland on Friday night may be a bit more problematic then originally believed.
Gardenhire also said Joe Mauer’s heel injury could keep him out week-to-week, rather than day-to-day as originally ancticipated [sic]. If Mauer is forced to go on the DL, Wilson Ramos — who bats eighth in his major league debut today — will be the starting catcher, with Drew Butera remaining the backup.
Yikes. Week-to-week? That’s like…
(counting on fingers)
…
…like a whole bunch of days, man!
For those of you poo-pooing the news, this could not only be a critical blow to the early season success of the Twins, but a potentially devastating development for baseball as a whole. You see, long ago, it was prophesied by MLB elders that the Sideburned One would appear and bring about the next Golden Age of Major League Baseball. Any time Mauer is away from protecting the integrity of the game could spell certain doom for the entire league. The evildoers will return and chaos will reign once again. So let it be written, so let it be done.
Was that a bit too much? Yeah, I suppose the prophecy bit could be considered a little over the top, but not in a good way, like that Sylvester Stallone movie.
