Don Cherry doesn't want to hear any more from you internet mouth-breathers

May 2, 2010, 11:45 AM EDT

Don Cherry is something of a cultural oddity in Canada. Revered and hated by Canadians with equal passion, he knows how to push the viewers’ buttons when they tune into his “Coach’s Corner” rants during CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada broadcasts. Love him or hate him, Cherry is provocative, insightful and his passion and love for the game of hockey is immeasurable.
Unfortunately, a segment during postgame coverage of Game 1 of the Canadiens-Penguins series – a game Pittsburgh convincingly won 6-3 – was more than Don Cherry could tolerate. From something called the iDesk, anchors Jeff Marek and Scott Morrison were reading and reacting to random fan comments from a CBC live blog which were less than complimentary to Habs goalie Jaroslav Halak, whose amazing performance during Montreal’s quarterfinal series against the Washington Capitals is the primary reason the Canadiens even advanced to the second round.
Cherry couldn’t believe that the good reputation of Hockey Night In Canada as an informative resource for hockey fans was being sullied by reading “e-mails from jerks.” To put it mildly, Cherry wasn’t impressed.
Video after the jump.

Below is my best approximation of what Cherry said while lambasting the decision of the CBC to broadcast the knee-jerk reactions of anonymous internet trolls:

“Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Just a minute. At Hockey Night in Canada, we are being reduced to reading e-mails from some jerk like we’re in a choir or something? Redloc Havalcoc or whatever? That is absolutely ridiculous to be reading e-mails from jerks on Hockey Night in Canada. I resent it.”

And the video (via SB Nation):

Oh, Don Cherry. Shine on you crazy diamond.
But his condemnation of reading the comments in the first place brings up a few things to consider. First of all, is Cherry right? Did airing the anonymous comments by some nattering nabobs of negativity who were clearly overreacting to one measly loss the best use of the Hockey Night In Canada platform? In a way, Cherry is dead-on accurate. The particular comments chosen brought no beneficial insight whatsoever to the broadcast and in some ways, only contribute to opinion that people on the internet are a bunch of ham-fisted trolls.
On the other hand, vitriolic commentary is Don Cherry’s bread and butter. Maybe he feels threatened that some guy with an internet connection in Blainville is stealing his bit?
Doubtful. Some random internet commenter in a Montreal suburb probably couldn’t afford Cherry’s retina-scorching suits. Which I suppose is a good thing for everyone.

Not to disagree with a fellow “internet mouth-breather” like April, but Don’s getting more and more out-of-touch with today’s NHL as shown here: http://singingfromthecrease.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/514-the-penguins-hit-the-links-caps-fans-get-some-solace-and-don-cherry-is-stuck-in-the-days-of-old-ive-got-a-gripe-with-grapes/
    His reign is nearly over!
