Elephants react to Roethlisberger being banned at Pittsburgh Zoo

As you’ve likely heard by now, the Pittsburgh Zoo has removed Ben Roethlisberger’s name from one of its exhibits, bringing to an inglorious end his reign as a method for children to compare heights of animals at the elephant enclosure. (Photos here). WPXI has the details:

Roethlisberger’s name has been part of a display that compares the height of elephants to other creatures. But the facility is having a new sign made that will replace Roethlisberger’s name with former Pittsburgh Penguins star and team owner Mario Lemieux.

“Mr. Roethlisberger isn’t the most popular person lately,” Tracy Gray, the zoo’s manager of public and media relations, said.

Over at the other side of the zoo, the penguins are furious. But the elephants are celebrating at this hour. Our exclusive report:


We weren’t able to contact a zoo spokesperson, but an elephant did agree to talk with us.
Out of Bounds: You’re an elephant?
Elephant: Yep.
OOB: Holding the phone receiver with your trunk, are you?
Elephant: Yeah, that’s right.
OOB: How do you feel about Ben Roethlisberger’s name being removed from your exhibit?
Elephant: Well, we elephants got together and took a vote. We decided that, considering recent events, his is not a name we want associated with our proud species.
OOB: So the elephants decided this? And the zoo just went along with it?
Elephant: Have you ever seen a person buried in elephant crap?
OOB: But why Mario Lemieux?
