Tuesday Blogdome: The Phanatic has lost it, must be stopped

Apr 13, 2010, 4:00 PM EDT

Lady Gaga Phanatic Is Scary. As if little children weren’t already scared by the big green fella, I think it’s safe to say the Phillie Phanatic will never cease to surprise us. From Monday’s home opener in Philly, that’s the Phanatic wearing an interesting wardrobe choice while dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” We can’t confirm it, but fans in the first few rows reported the Phanatic to have some strange protrusion coming out of his outfit. * After winning the Masters, Phil Mickelson hits Krispy Kreme. If you don’t already like Phil Mickelson, he’s making it awfully hard to hate him now. Check out this shot, allegedly taken Monday morning outside an Augusta Krispy Kreme. [Devil Ball Golf]

* You Need To Apologize For Calling Ben Roethlisberger An Alleged Rapist. While reading up about this whole Ben Roethlisberger alleged rape-tastic fiasco, I found this column from the Beaver County (heh) Times, written by some guy named Mark Madden. I’m not a very big fan of tearing apart other writers’ work, and I don’t do it often, but the fact that he was demanding fans to apologize to Big Ben made me filled with rage. Enjoy.. or not. * French Con Man Nearly Snuck Onto Professional Bulgarian Pro Soccer Team. French con artist Greg Akcelrod almost parlayed a crudely assembled Web site filled with forged press clipping and video clips into a job on CSKA Sofia, one of the most storied professional soccer clubs in Bulgaria. Of course, he didn’t count on them actually wanting to see him perform his daring feats of athletic prowess before officially granting him a spot on the roster. [The Sporting Blog]
* And the Worst At-Bat Song in Baseball is… But in all my years of baseball viewing and (subsequent) bad song hearing during this personalized at-bat song era, I’ve never heard a player choose an audio clip as supremely awful as the one I heard during today’s Yankees home opener. As Nick Johnson stepped to the plate for his first at-bat as a member of the home team at new Yankee Stadium, I heard it faintly in the broadcast’s background — Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.” [Bugs and Cranks]
* Officers strike Maryland student after Duke game. The Maryland-Duke post-game celebration last month got a bit peppy, as I noted back then, but there were immediately accusations that the police went beyond mere peppiness. On Monday, this video surfaced of P.G. police striking a student, apparently without provocation. It’s more than a tad disturbing. [DC Sports Bog]
* The Many Voices of “It’s in the Hole” Guy at the 2010 Masters. Nothing is more of a yearly tradition at Augusta National than the presence of “It’s in the Hole” Guy — the overzealous and particularly vocal fan who has been celebrated as deserved on these pages. Rest assured, this past weekend, he showed up in force, and by “he” we mean not just one, but many versions of “It’s in the Hole” Guy. [Joe Sports Fan]
