A 13-year-old girl's NCAA picks were better than yours

Yes, it’s true that my 16-year-old goddaughter won our NBCSports office pool last year; but that included only 140 people, and most of them were drunk when they filled out their brackets. Here’s Brittany Goshia, a 13-year-old from Colorado won won the CBS Bracket Challenge NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament contest, which had close to a half million contestants. Her secret to success?

“I started watching basketball in February to see what I thought about the teams, and who would win and go far,” Brittany said. “I definitely looked at the rankings and who really had the potential to go, like Butler was on their winning streak, so I thought they’d keep that up for a while, but Duke was my favorite so I knew they’d beat them out.”

Well, at least it was scientific.

Once Kansas, Georgetown and Syracuse were all knocked off in the early going, you just knew that there was going to be a lot of weird office pool winners. The upset situation made the field ripe for receptionists, wives, kids, pets … in my pool, a dog finished eighth.
Bitter? Of course; it goes without saying (destroys Harry Potter DVD).

So what about that grand prize $58,000 car CBSSports.com mentions on their bracket Web site? Brittany thought it could be hers.

“Then I started looking at the fine print and it says the top 10 percent go into a drawing and they’ll pull it out from there,” Steve Goshia said.

That means Brittany beat the odds once, but needs to do it again in a drawing this month for her mother to win a new set of wheels.

“She’ll win the car, but when I’m 16, I’ll get it back,” Brittany said.

So after all that she gets a lottery pick, where most likely she’ll end up with nothing? It’s like being a Warriors fan.
