It probably wasn’t Nike’s best-case scenario to roll out its new Tiger Woods ad on the same day that we find out he allegedly slept with his next door neighbor’s daughter. Our fallen angel begins play at the Masters today with this giant matzo ball sitting out there: a rather shameless commercial using the voice of Tiger’s dead father asking him if he’s “learned anything.” Tiger as tragic hero? Tiger as victim? I don’t know about you, but I can’t watch it with a straight face; they should have just used the voice of Alec Guiness reminding Tiger to “use the Force.”
This version of the commercial is much better, and gets right to the heart of the matter. We don’t blame Nike for sticking with their guy in times of trouble. But to use Tiger’s incredible lack of judgment and character for shameless hucksterism? This is going to backfire in a gigantic way, if it hasn’t already. Huge. Quickly.
Thursday, huh? I’ve heard rumors that you were real. Never really believe ‘em, though.
