PETA has a proposal for bleacher-poor Chicago high school

Mar 30, 2010, 5:00 PM EDT

The problem: Someone is stealing the bleachers from the football field at Chicago’s Orr High School. Yep, as incredible as it sounds, a thief has been showing up in the middle of the night and dismantling the seating panels and connecting supports and hauling ‘em away, possibly to be sold as scrap metal. And seeing that the bleachers were just donated to the school in August, and the damage so far totals approximately $45,000, that’s some b——- right there.
The solution: PETA to the rescue? People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has made an offer to Orr officials to help replace the bleachers with a donation of $5,000 … but there’s one condition.

PETA will help foot the bill to fix the bleachers — and provide a veggie burger lunch for the entire school — if Orr agrees to have an anti-McDonald’s add printed on the new structure. As such, that would make it the first pro-chicken sports seating in the greater Chicago area, and possibly the state of Illinois. Cows and domestic fowl approve, but will Orr accept the offer? From The Peta Files:

PETA has just the thing to raise morale at Orr High and the community’s awareness of the suffering that’s endured by chickens who are killed for McNuggets. We’re offering the school $5,000 and a veggie-burger lunch in exchange for placing this McCruelty ad on its new bleachers:

If there’s one thing rivaling teams and fans can agree on, it’s that scalding chickens in defeathering tanks is a real fumble. By spreading the message that McDonald’s needs to push its suppliers to adopt controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK) — a less cruel method of slaughtering chickens — Orr High could rally for chickens every day of the week.

As for the Chicago police, some say that they could be doing a better job of catching the thief. Apparently sometime in January a security guard chased the miscreant, who dropped his cell phone. The school turned it in to police, who have yet to get back to them.
UPDATE: Oops, my bad. Looks like they have caught the guy.
