Why all the Duke hate? You may as well ask the meaning of life itself; it’s one of the Great Conundrums of the universe, along with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream being labeled as containing “three servings.” But as to the first issue, members of the Rumors & Rants team traveled to far-off Houston over the weekend to ask Duke fans themselves why people hate them so much. My favorite response didn’t come from this guy, who just seemed confused by the question. It came from a guy in a chef’s hat and a Duke t-shirt.
“Duke stands for goodness and achievement, and that is what America is all about.”
I’ve never really thought about it before, but after that, now I think I hate Duke.
Two videos following the jump.
Next, Baylor fans are asked to name their two bear mascots. Awk-ward.
As for the Duke question, I have the beginnings of an answer, I think. Early in the second half of the Duke-Baylor game, a Baylor player puts up a shot from the corner, and Baylor’s Quincy Acy positions himself a couple of feet from the basket for a potential offensive rebound. Standing several feet away, Duke’s Kyle Singler runs over and stands in front of Acy, throws his arms back and blocks him out. Not one in five college players would bother to do that; and indeed, Acy was so surprised that he didn’t even try to fight through Singler to regain position. But it goes to show once again that Mike Krzyzewski teaches the little things that make the difference in a close game. Rebounding is often no more than just having the moxy to hustle over and stand in front of someone.
What many perceive as preferential treatment by the officials is really in many cases Duke doing the imperceptible fundamentals that only a ref is close enough to notice. Krzyzewski had that stuff drilled into him as a player at Army by Bobby Knight, and so it is handed down.
But as for Duke fans being jerkoffs, yeah, you may have something there.

Guess what people? We REAL Duke fans hate Duke alumni and students for the most part. They are the most PC correct sissy boys on the planet . . . they make us want to puke! 99% have never broken a sweat, were born with a silver spoon and are sickening to be around, they know nothing about basketball whatseover and couldn’t beat up a girl. Go to DukeBasketballReport.com and shake their little world . . . I’ve been banned from the site because I’m a REAL DUKE FAN AND REAL MAN not a sissy . . . the people that run the site make us real Duke fans want to puke. So we understand if you hate most of the alumni and the students . . . they are panty wearing sissy boys, but Duke the basketball team RULES BABY!

I went to an unnamed elite university in the Mid-Atlantic region, and what I and most of my fellow alumni learned was humility from having to comptete against tremendous brainpower for B’s or even C’s sometimes. Apparently, the only thing with which Duke students are imbued is arrogance that transcends even that of the Yankee fans. Perhaps this is related to a faculty and administration that tried and convicted its lacrosse team well in advance of hearing the whole story, and then faced no recriminations for their heinous behaviour. As a Maryland fan, I can only grudgingly admire Coach K and his program. Our fans are also on occasion unspeakably boorish (re: the treatment Boozer’s parents received at a game at College Park), but they’re no where near as stuck-up or obviously smitten with their very being as the Duke crowd. When you’re as good as Duke has been over the years, and have the opportunity to attend such an excellent institution, there should be no reason to gloat at the expense of other schools.

The look on Scheyers’ face after he threw the elbows in the Baylor game is why people hate Duke. It is the same look Hurley, Reddick, Leatner and Henderson had after they gotta away with one. They get calls they don’t deserve and the announcers are bias towards Duke as well. The hate for Duke is the same as the hate for S. Crosby, underserved adulation. Real fans can see right through the propoganda.

Hey Evan, go back to watching your UConn team in the NIT. Oh wait they lost there, too. Haters shouldn’t bring up the past when their season is already over! Waah!

Unfortunately, most Americans can’t identify with Duke, whose fans and coaches epitomize the kind of narcissistic fervor and arrogance usually reserved for royalty. Growing up near Polish Chicago, I aso know there is no “S” in Krzyzewski.
As a college professor, I’ve interacted with people from many institutions, including academic giants like Oxford, Harvard, and Stanford. These people were generally quite magnanimous and humble. Not so with the Duke alumni and students I have encountered, who weren’t quite good enough to get into Harvard, but still feel superior to all others. It’s actually quite pathetic.
Regarding basketball, I’ve not met a Duke fan yet who knows as much as your average Kansas, North Carolina, or Kentucky fan. It’s tragic that Duke gets preferential treatment in seeding, and a blight on the game that the NCAA selection committee enabled the Blue Devils to coast in through a weak regional. I will be pulling for WVU this weekend, and can envision nothing more splendid than a Butler – West Virginia final. This would be poetic justice to a bone-headed NCAA selection committee and the Duke fans who feel entitled to the final.

I don’t know where it comes from, but I believe that if you look at which universities have the most players in the NBA, Duke ranks pretty high. It would be nice if someone would post the number of players in the NBA from each final four team. Just a thought

Why don’t you do a story about Kentucky? They have some of the most class-less, ignorant fan base a school could ever have.

Never heard the Cameron Crazies mouth nasty, if “clever” epithets at selected Carolina players? Never? Come on! Tain’t so! Admit it! At times they have been over the top and told to dial it down by Duke officials. No question Duke is one of the premier basketball programs in the country, with Carolina, Kansas, & Kentucky. “Hate” Duke? Maybe so for some of the less discerning fans, for most of us, respect and admiration, if grudging from a dyed in the (Carolina blue) wool Carolina fan like myself. Do I root for the other team when Duke plays? Of course, but “hate”? No way!

Tom, I am thinking you probably teach Economics in Post Soviet Eurasia or some other worthless subject that will have no impact on any of your students life. I am a Duke alumnus who played soccer for the university, and graduated in civil engineering. I grew up in Durham and lived there until after graduate school. My father, mother and grandmother are all alumni, and I grew up loving Duke and hating Carolina. By the way I did get into Harvard, just didn’t want to tarnish my family’s good name. Probably 90 percent of my friends growing up were carolina fans and I can tell you from experience they were and are not very intelligent. As far as Duke’s weak region, look back at the favorites (Syracuse, Kansas, Ohio State, Kansas State) and tell me who other than Kentucky lost to a true quality squad? So it didn’t really matter how tough their region really was, does it? Dukes region may have looked weaker on paper, but I gaurantee that Baylor could have beaten 96% of the teams in this tournamnent, and Purdue was not far behind. Since you are a liberal arts professor, I’ll do the math and tell you thats about 61 teams +/- 1. Any way with all your interactions with Havard, Oxford, and Stanford (since you were obviously not qualified to get a job teaching at any of them), and your little conspiracy theories on how the seedings played out, why not just enjoy the games? The Duke-WVU game with be a great game between very good players and good coaches. I will be pulling for Duke, but if they lose oh well, they had a great season. Does Duke get alot of National TV time? of coures. They are a money bringer. The Duke-Baylor game brought 20% more viewrs to the table than last years North Carolina semi final. So to all the haters out there b*%#@ all you want about seeing them on national TV, as long as they bring in the green you will just have to change the channel, or continue to whine, or maybe one day your school will be able to be a money maker (doubtfull). Please keep hating it just makes us better and richer as a school. As far as superiority, I have worked with engineers from a multitude of different engineering schools and the ones that have impressed the most over the years are not the Ivy League schools or even Duke, but the Virgina Tech, and the Colorado School of Mines. You want true superiority, go to one of those two. I guess what I am trying to say is, well…… just check out my name.

You got to the crux of the matter, Philip. I used to like Duke until the “Lacrosse Incident.” That showed that even the administration has no class, just like lots of their fans as evidenced by the four letter words in their blogs. If my children want to go there, it’s on their dime. I’m really astounded that it is STILL one of the most popular schools and that their admissions didn’t suffer. And to boosie2, as a Vandy fan, I couldn’t agree more.
