Doofus in blue wig not sure why people hate Duke

Mar 29, 2010, 12:00 PM EDT

Why all the Duke hate? You may as well ask the meaning of life itself; it’s one of the Great Conundrums of the universe, along with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream being labeled as containing “three servings.” But as to the first issue, members of the Rumors & Rants team traveled to far-off Houston over the weekend to ask Duke fans themselves why people hate them so much. My favorite response didn’t come from this guy, who just seemed confused by the question. It came from a guy in a chef’s hat and a Duke t-shirt.

“Duke stands for goodness and achievement, and that is what America is all about.”

I’ve never really thought about it before, but after that, now I think I hate Duke.
Two videos following the jump.

Next, Baylor fans are asked to name their two bear mascots. Awk-ward.

As for the Duke question, I have the beginnings of an answer, I think. Early in the second half of the Duke-Baylor game, a Baylor player puts up a shot from the corner, and Baylor’s Quincy Acy positions himself a couple of feet from the basket for a potential offensive rebound. Standing several feet away, Duke’s Kyle Singler runs over and stands in front of Acy, throws his arms back and blocks him out. Not one in five college players would bother to do that; and indeed, Acy was so surprised that he didn’t even try to fight through Singler to regain position. But it goes to show once again that Mike Krzyzewski teaches the little things that make the difference in a close game. Rebounding is often no more than just having the moxy to hustle over and stand in front of someone.
What many perceive as preferential treatment by the officials is really in many cases Duke doing the imperceptible fundamentals that only a ref is close enough to notice. Krzyzewski had that stuff drilled into him as a player at Army by Bobby Knight, and so it is handed down.
But as for Duke fans being jerkoffs, yeah, you may have something there.

Do Duke Fans Know Why They Are Hated? [Rumors & Rants]
Sorry Baylor, bear-ly knew you [Rumors & Rants]

Breathe….if you hate Duke. Coach K always reminds me of the munchkin in the Wizard of OZ that says “We represent the lollipop guild”. It’s hard to take the litte fella seriously.
I respect winning, but only when it is done with honor. Duke wins more than most, but lacks honor. They play dirty and act innocent. They cry when they don’t get their way. They are an elitist(not elite) basketball program. I may never be as smart as them, but I do have my integrity.

    But wipe! Racist Tool!

  3. hank - Mar 30, 2010 at 2:34 PM

bwahahaha…. funny, funny shit man! wow! You probably also believe the world is square because Duke tells you to believe that.
No NBA talent… give me a break. Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, Grant Hill, JJ, Luol Deng, Shane Battier, etc…..
By the way it was just last year that Duke was starting to lose its luster as being an elite team.
Just for the record its that kind of humbles that oozes out of you that makes Duke such a likable team!

Duke fans I’m not one of you BUT, I can relate on some level. As a Spartan Alumnus I’ve heard nothin but bullsh*t all regular season
(a dysfunctional team) right up to the Final Four (do they belong here?)It’s all come from sports writers who obviously don’t understand Coach Izzo’s methods or the heart and soul of the MSU basketball team. I indeed have replied to each and everyone of them to reprint their crap in late March because we are “Made for March”.Now Selection Monday was I not shocked when I compared the South region to the Midwest? Absolutely!!! The only team missing from our region for God’s sake was YOU and we would have loved to have ya.
Will you ever see me in a green fright wig or any MSU alumni I know? No F’ing way. Why? Don’t need to, we’ve got the coolest mascot in the NCAA and the IZZONE. Do Dukies bother me? Hell no. Does favorable seeding ,like being able to sleep thru your first 2 games bother me? Not really because it’s the concensus and people do not Forget that stuff and the NCAA has heard a lot of it. Do favorable calls upset me? Nope..I’m trying to get ref Ed Hightower transfered to your conference. When he refs an MSU game he calls 70% more fouls ( not in our favor) Oddly he seems to favor teams who start 4-5 white kids whats weird is he’s black, work that one out for me will ya.
You have a great coach I’ll watch your game. If Vitale is calling it I’ll watch with the sound off. Do him a favor though. Buy Coach K a gift certificate to a styling salon.. Let him get a cut that brings into even the last century, maybe a mullet, I know he’ll have to adjust slowly..This isn’t a dig .it’s just that the rest of us have to see him all year even if he isn’t winning and it’s time for a change..lol
If MSU gets knocked off by Butler which is sorta unlikely. I think Coach Huggins deserves it.Yeah MSU vs. WVU.C’mon our coaches have been there done that…tho MSU can beat Duke I wish we could skip Butler and go right to your throat…best of luck

I’ve never met a single duke grad – but i’ve met tons of Duke fans that wont stop flapping about how great duke is.
    Front Running Fans. Reason #1.

  6. DeaconFan - Mar 30, 2010 at 4:24 PM

1979, walking down the sideline of Cameron Indoor as Wake and Duke were going through warm-ups. Duke fans packed in like sardines. They decided to welcome us by spitting. Going deep, dredging up serious loogies, and letting them fly. Classy bunch. That’s why I hate Duke and always will.

  7. Don - Mar 30, 2010 at 9:42 PM

The real reasons to hating Duke are very clear. Duke likes to not only beat, but crush inferior teams. K tries to win by 50. Keep those seniors out there to have big scoring nights. The other reason is to watch K closely as he gets on officials constantly. He must have had pictures on the NCAA committees several years to get the seeding he has received.

You’d think that there are more than a dozen or so that need to be mentioned. Grant Hill and Elton Brand stand out, and it’s taken Cory Maggette years to become a star. But if you look at the quantity and quality of what UNC, KU, and Kansas, send, I don’t think it’s close.
Laettner is considered by some to be the best Duke player ever and Grant Hill would mop the floor with hiom in minutes IMO. Here’s one link that may help you come to realize that Duke has great college players whose games either don’t translate well to the NBA or they end up getting seriously hurt before the play in the NBA(see Bobby Hurley and Jay Williams). Jay could have ended up a top ten PG in the NBA and maybe Top 50 all time player.
    http://www.americasbestonline.net/index.php/pages
    /top100collegebasketballplayers.html
Here is the link that says it all tho – The top 50 All time NBA players. Not much from Duke.
But again -Duke’s players have a tendency to get into serious accidents and the way that Coach K uses them seldom lends to an easy transition. Conversely- UNC sends guys to the NBA that contribute more to a team system.
As for the reason Duke is so hated is because when Coach K came into the league he set the bar for the officials to avoid calling fouls on Duke players by making the statement to the effect that ” when it came to officiating -there was UNC and then there was all the other teams who weren’t UNC”. But he made it to get the advantage and it stuck. But if you go back and look at the older tapes, UNC outhustled every team they played. If they lost it was because the other team had a really great night. NOT because they were out worked or overmatched. Coach K learned that he still had to get his team to play as hard as UNC in order to compete. And yet even after all the years he had and the really good runs of players he recruited, he still had a losing record against the Dean.
So by trying to change the playing field without even playing the game Coach K tried to set a precedent and the fans jumped on and supported that. That was weak, on his part and the fans. Most people who remember that can tell you to the day when they began to hate or stop pulling for Duke. A sense of entitlement that was never deserved but rudely and incorrectly established. Elitism under the cover of a Good Ole Boys mirage which go or went to a school which was founded in religion and whose fans act like they’ve never heard a single prayer. At least the whine and cheese crowd at UNC aren’t as hypocritical. And just so you know – I won’t pull for UNC until that crybaby Roy Williams retires and his politically correct friends have no say in who coaches there.
    Go Underdog Teams !

Just so you don’t have to continue to claim to have never heard a Carolina fan say something nice about Duke, here goes.
I am an original Carolina loyalist, having been born in the hospital on campus. Were I to bleed–an activity I seek to avoid–it would be Carolina blue you would see.
Duke is our arch rival, and easily the most consistent at being good year after year after year. Yes, we have two national titles since they were last in the Final Four, but here they are now, poised to win it all, and we are playing for a title…but it is the NIT.
I have tremendous respect for Coach K. He runs a solid program and, as is pointed out in this article, teaches the fundamentals as priority one, not as an afterthought.
Duke makes Carolina better by proving to be such a stern challenge every year.
Please don’t ever again claim that no Carolina fan has shown respect for Duke.

  10. Chris Moore - Mar 31, 2010 at 12:40 PM

I hate Duke for their preferential treatment by the refs, their cheerleaders in the media, and most of all, because I’m a Maryland fan. Between their fans chanting “crackhead parents” at Juan Dixon and the “Gone in 60 Seconds” game, they will forever have my hatred

  11. The Timekeeper - Mar 31, 2010 at 4:16 PM

It goes back to the 1992 game between Kentuck and Duke. You know that suppposed great game where Christian Laetner catches that pass at the top of the key and hits the game winner. What most peole forget is in that Same Game, Laetner put his foot on top of a Kentucky player while that plaer lay on the gound helpless. Not only did the referess ignore it,Coach K did nothing either. as an objective fan, not rooting for either team,I was appalled and stunned. That may be why Laetner wound up as a second rate journeyman, rather than a star which he should have been. Had Coach K rang his neck like he should have, it may have made a difference for him. Instead he continued on with that prima donna approach thruout his NBA career. It is that Elitist mentality which I think so many people despise. Now, I would never expect Duke fans to get that so this isnt necessarily for your consumption. but for those sekeing a real reason, this is one of the major ones.

  12. Tony - Mar 31, 2010 at 5:16 PM

A friend of mine from college interned for Coack K in 2002; he attained that position with help from his dad who graduated from Duke. He told me that Coach K almost makes it a point not to recruit any thugs or gangbangers into his program. Simply due to the fact that they would not fit into that kind of environment, or handle the academics for that matter. The majority of Duke’s players end up playing on the team for 4 years, they’re not going to be one and done’s like: Carmello Anthony, Greg Oden, or Derrick Rose. Players like Corey Maggette are a rare exception at Duke.
People hate Duke because for the most part they conduct themselves with class, and they continue to have tremendous success. Duke always enters the season with a strong possibility of going to the Final Four. Do their players talk trash and sometimes play dirty, yes they do. But go ahead and name a top-tier program in this country whose players don’t exhibit those actions on occasion. In big time college basketball and football, players will talk trash, it’s part of the game. Probably 80-90% of the time they play the game the way it’s supposed to be played, Clean and Hard. That’s why referees want to give them the benefit of the doubt on close calls.
As far as their fans and alumni; I can’t exactly defend them. The only thing that I can say is that ALL major schools have fans that are Jerkoffs, and Duke is no exception. I live in Chicago, and I’ve met alumni from schools such as: Notre Dame, Michigan, and Northwestern. Alumni from those schools are very similar to what Duke’s sound like. A large percentage of them are: full of themselves, arrogant, and annoying. Hey, nobody’s perfect.

  13. Tiara - Mar 31, 2010 at 6:23 PM

I hate Duke because 1) I’m a Carolina fan (I bleed only Carolina blue) and 2) I had the choice between Duke and Carolina for college and chose Carolina because all the people at Duke seemed extremely conceited and arrogant, people at Carolina were a little more humble and laid back. Just don’t talk junk about our basketball team and you’ll be good to go.

  14. hockeygirl - Mar 31, 2010 at 7:15 PM

Flopping when never touched, whining and arguing with the refs over calls that don’t go their way, arguing about the clock and the call and never being given a T, taunting opponents, leaving starters in when they are up by more than 20 points with only a minute to go, throwing elbows, pinching, punching, pushing, spitting, cussing, moving picks disguised as a “weave” offense, take your pick.
Duke teams do not display good sportsmanship and neither does their coach.
But hey, what I do love about Duke fans is the fact that for four straight years students camped outside Cameron in miserable weather just to get tickets so they could watch the Duke team lose to UNC. Think about it, seniors who had been out there every year missing classes, catching and passing on pneumonia and worse just to go to the games, seniors who never saw their team win even one of those games against UNC at home, and still they were there.

  15. TC - Apr 3, 2010 at 10:01 PM

Although I consider myself a Duke fan, I’m more of an ACC fan. I’ve got to say though, of all the fans I’ve talked with, Carolina fans are probbly the worst, and don’t get me wrong, I love UNC. Worst in the sense that they have absolutely no respect for any of the other ACC schools much less Duke. I think one reason people hate Duke is because no other team in the nation does more with less. It’s flash vs substance. Duke may not be the flashiest but they will beat your ass with fundamentals. Yes, maybe it’s boring to watch, but they’re the ones running roughshod through the tourney. Go ask Baylor and what is looking like WVU. Be honest, how shocked would you be if Duke didn’t make the tourney? More shocked than Carolina not making it?

  16. cody J - Apr 5, 2010 at 7:47 PM

what did you say? Duke dosen’t stand a chance? Hmm didnt they win? Oh yea they did now their playing in the championship Huh whats that you say? your gay no way bro thats sucks for you. DUKE forever

  17. Knibbs T - Apr 15, 2010 at 2:54 PM

Regardless of which coach it is, in today’s world of money and greed, any coach that can retain players at a very high percentile foru four year, graduation, deserves some praise and recognition. By the way, I a big DUKE Fan, go Duke!!!!!
