Tim Tebow shows a lot more maturity than Urban Meyer

The Palm Beach Post tracked down Tim Tebow at a Boy Scout function in which he was the keynote speaker — how perfect is that? — on Thursday, and took the opportunity to ask America’s Quarterback when he thought of former teammate Deonte Thompson’s comments about him. You know the ones, in which Thompson compared Tebow’s style to that of current Gators’ QB John Brantley, saying that Tebow “wasn’t a real quarterback.”
Unlike Florida coach Urban Meyer, who had an emotional meltdown and angrily confronted the Orlando Sentinel scribe who first reported the quote, Tebow said that he had no problem with it.
Video following the jump.

“I think (Thompson) was just saying how it is,” Tebow said. “(I) might be scrambling for a while, and throw it up to you. Brantley’s more of a guy who throws on timing. You know when it’s going to come there or it’s not going to come there. It’s how me and Brantley are. Just stating facts, I think.”

Here’s the original Thompson quote:

“Things are going to get better here in the future. Any receiver would be happy. You have a guy like Brantley throwing the ball, spreading it around to everybody. You never know with Tim. You can bolt, you think he’s running, but he’ll come up and pass it to you. You just have to be ready at all times. With Brantley, everything’s with rhythm, time. You know what I mean, a real quarterback.”

Tebow also commented on his infamous anti-abortion Super Bowl ad, saying that it was “classy.” And he talked to the Boy Scouts about doing Boy Scoutish things.

“There are so many other things I want to do that are more important than football,” he said. “Trying to make a difference. That’s what my life is all about. I always want to be known as someone who was better off the field than on the field. People are going to forget the touchdowns, and the trophies are going to rust. But what you do for people and the impact you have on people is going to last forever.”

While Tebow may look at the world through Disney-colored glasses, it’s a sentiment that’s hard with which to argue. He did a pretty good job smoothing over Meyer’s mess (headline of the day, Fanhouse’s ‘Urban Decay.’). Amazing how such a nice guy (Tebow) can be such a polarizing figure. Guess that’s what happens when you combine religion and football.
By the way, Tebow’s dad, Bob, told Sam Kouvaris of Sam Sportsline on the subject of the NFL Draft: “If the Jaguars don’t take him at 10, he’ll be gone by 15.” Thanks for that pressure, dad. If the adults in his life would just shut up, Tim Tebow would have a much easier time of it.
