Is Tiger's comeback choice another cheap shot at women?

Mar 17, 2010, 10:00 AM EDT

Interesting column today by Filip Bondy of the New York Daily News, who asks the musical question, how could Tiger Woods be so insensitive as to pick The Masters in which to make his comeback? It’s more than a bit ironic, says Bondy, that Woods would choose Augusta National, what with it’s history of institutionalized sexism.

It’s a decision that suggests a continued lack of moral compass, but makes considerable logistical sense. Augusta members, about 300 of them, will surely embrace their wayward superstar and hold at bay all reminders of a real world. This is headquarters for the good old boys of golf and, after all, good old boys have been known to stray.

Plus, updated Tiger Masters odds, following the jump.

Hoo boy. What do you think? More Bondy:

Just walk into the clubhouse, don a green jacket, and all is forgotten. What happens outside Augusta, stays outside Augusta. Many battles against this place have been fought, lost and largely forsaken. There are still no women members, and fewer people bother with that cause now than they did just a few short years ago.

Martha Burk, who was caricatured for all her efforts, didn’t return phone calls or e-mails yesterday. Her days camped outside Augusta National are likely done. Spokespersons for several women’s groups, in Washington and Georgia, declined to comment on Woods’ decision to make his stand next month among the pretty azaleas, and the all-male membership.

In many ways, Woods is just collecting on a debt owed him from the past decade, when he carefully refused to criticize the club or threaten a boycott of the Masters unless a woman were invited to become a member. At the time, Woods was cautiously orchestrating a career devoid of controversy and filled with endorsements, until the roof fell in on his dalliances.

I’m not saying that I totally agree with Bondy, but there’s no doubt that it would have been a huge goodwill gesture by Tiger to make a show of NOT playing the Masters this year. It’s one thing to call a press conference and say that you’re a changed man, but it’s quite another to literally put your money where your mouth is.
But I’d really like to know what Elin Nordegren thinks of this. After all that she’s been through, would she have the same thoughts on following Tiger around Augusta this year?

Tiger Woods’ choice to come back at Masters in Augusta is latest shot at women [New York Daily News]

  1. TDeRamus - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:30 PM

Nike will definitely not have a commercial featuring Tiger during the weekend broadcast of The Masters. Commercial time is very limited during The Masters, and Nike won’t be advertising during the tournament.

  2. vinnide64 - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:30 PM

    YOU SAID IT PAL!

  3. Henry C. Brewster - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:31 PM

When Tiger pulls his putter it will end all conversation. As for the rest. Brigham Young did much worse.

  4. Rodney - Compton - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:32 PM

It’s not really a news article. It’s an story about someone else’s article. Whoever Rick Chandler is, I loved the part where he wrote “I’m not saying that I totally agree(with the article)…”
That’s a classic statement in the annals of wimp-dom.

  5. JimC - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:35 PM

I think Tiger picked the Masters so his caddy Steve won’t have to be a cop- the Masters people will escort all the yokels off the course. Also- what better way to get rid of many of the detractors than by winning another major? It will prove sex and golf can co-exist. Now don’t confuse that with dumbya saying he thought fish and man could co-exist.

  6. sandiego1969 - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:36 PM

Where ever the comeback begins, someone will be heard to yell the old standard, “get in the….” and that will be a sad commentary on what had been a game of honor on and off the course. From a president to a major sports figure people have a greater interest in being entertained than demanding quality from those same people. It is just a sad commentary on America.

  7. goodcall - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:37 PM

Worst article ever written and we read it. I feel dumber than the moron who wrote it down.

  8. mThompson - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:38 PM

Bondy is a TWIT! Maybe one day he will write as good as Tiger plays golf. Then he can move onto the big time papers. Until then, he will probably continue to scribble garbage like this.

  9. johnnyhandsome913 - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:49 PM

I’m not saying that I totally agree with Bondy, but there’s no doubt that it would have been a huge goodwill gesture by Tiger to make a show of NOT playing the Masters this year
Seriously. How dumb is this sentence? This is IDIOTIC, RIDICULOUS, EMBICILIC, MORONISH, STUPID, just plain SARAH PALANIST!!!

  10. carl43m - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:50 PM

I have seen just about everything now! What a stretch to try and make a story out of nothing. It is hard to believe someone was actually paid a salary to write this asine story. Get a life! The Masters is the first major of the year. Tiger is trying to win majors. If it weren’t a major he would probably stay put till the U.S. Open. Would someone on your media staff get real! I wanted to vomit when I read this stupid story.

  11. vinnide64 - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:54 PM

Awwww po baby, who hurt dat whittle baby…sounds like da big bad tiger man did..now now, are you mad that he’s such a ho and he didn’t give you any on da low low? and you say he has no balls! my did you get dat close to see? where dey black oh scuse me, he don’t have none…and da baby says he has no class and wants somebody to whoop his @ss! tisk tisk dere whittle baby now mommy has told you a dow-sand times dat if he can’t get yo booty den don’t get mad if he get’s somebody else’s o-tay! and if you is half da golfer he is and have billins not billions but billins(more than can be imagined) you can’t talk about class, but dat baby must don’t no what dat means or maybe he does cus baby’s are so perfect now ain’t dat right…now take you bottle of milk and go to sleep and try not to dweam about dat bad ol’ tiger man.

  12. Oh Well - Mar 17, 2010 at 4:55 PM

That article was totally stupid. So Tiger is the only one playing in the Masters? What you don’t have any bashing for the rest of the MALES playing in the Masters? I never heard anyone bashing Jack or Arnie for playing in the Masters?
Can we have a meeting with all of you that seem to be able to walk on water and live in a glass house.

  13. kevin - Mar 17, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Isn’t this reading into things a bit too much? Why wouldn’t he want to make a comeback at a hugely prestigeous tournament?
Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a douche and I hope he plays horribly, but come on…you could read into any event he came back for.

  14. Irish3 - Mar 17, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Do they actually pay you to write this stupid stuff? Goodwill gesture? Are you kidding us. If you have writers block ….be like Tiger, go to bad writers therapy somewhere, and take four months off from writing. You may not feel better, but of us will.

  15. GUNS527 - Mar 17, 2010 at 5:53 PM

Tiger is a a ridiculous (whatever)-being! Quit raising him up to a god-like golfer. He’s a jerk with no morals! Yeah, others before him did bed-hopping too, but they were either caught and paid some consequence, or they managed to keep things quiet until they became irrelevent! Let Tiger get what’s coming to him, he definitely earned it. Congressmen are dropping like flies for their infidelity; those bums in other pro sports get jumped on too, but the common denominator is simply this-just because someone has fame, “who cares what they do in their private life, as long as they give ‘me’ my jollies.” All of you who bypass ethics and morals for results are pathetic. If you think Society is accepting the ‘vaseline, condom, and STD players’, you belong on an island where everything goes. Then you can suffer the pains there alone, and leave the majority of Society alone who admonishes adultery and infidelity!

  16. Geo - Mar 17, 2010 at 6:00 PM

Let’s see if I have this straight. Super star black man ….married to a beautiful white Swedish swim suit model…. goes and has affairs with multiple white woman……decides to get redemption in Georgia…..at a plantation styled country club run by white males, at an event called(drum roll please)…..The Masters!

  17. GUNS527 - Mar 17, 2010 at 6:12 PM

Maybe some brave soul will come out of hiding from a nearby bush and swat a 5-iron directly into Tiger’s privates. AND right in front of those carpetbaggers and their southern cronies. That would serve that ‘pimp’ a right-on on behalf of the countless people who find his actions disgusting, nauseating and repulsive!

  18. Chris - Mar 17, 2010 at 6:37 PM

I think that the few people on this site that are hating on Tiger should go and find a life. Tiger probably has 3 maids cleaning his house, while some of you are busy looking for any site that you can find to bash him and your houses are not even clean. Go get a life!!!!!

  19. wake up - Mar 17, 2010 at 6:48 PM

People need to “shut up” !!!.. if they could play as well as he plays, they’d be there playing.
what ever the women did, they did as ADULT FEMALES, they should know how to control and regulate their sex, and they did, and they shared it where they chose to do so. If they wanted to be paid, they should have asked a price, other than that, Shut up, because they already knew he was married. So they are do no more than the romp they decided to engage in bed.
Not one of these people flapping their lips, can play as well as Tiger, and he earned his money, just like the rest of the Golfers, it’s not Tiger’s problem they did not earn more. And you can bet your butt, they have “bedded down, some of the women who follow them around just like any other profession, has women, following to get hooked up.
people should mind their own business, watch the game, and respect the talent and worry about what’s in their own pants, and deal with it, and stop acting like a bunch of voyeuristic clowns because they did not get to have access to random choices of sex mates. and the women who did not get picked, would have done the same thing in they could have gotten the change.
American has more hypocrites than anything imaginable.

  20. Big Ed 1935 - Mar 17, 2010 at 6:53 PM

Tiger picked here so the Gestapos of golf with their military arm bands could protect him from the public.
Hope his marriage pans out but he is still a weenie!

  21. Hipocrit's !!! - Mar 17, 2010 at 6:58 PM

some of these same women, carrying signs, are some of the same women, who are bargaining themselves within their own relationships, laying in bed with an attitude, the minute the man does not give them what they expect, or acting with attitudes, the minute the man say’s no to something.
and mostly 98% of them would leave their own man in a eye’s blink, if he lost his job and could not pay her way in life and give her trinkets.
People are like a mob, led by ignorance, to make themselves look like fools, worried about stuff that does not concern them. 80% of the Nation is on SECOND AND THIRD MARRIAGES, and it did not happen because they are all some sparking, virtue clad beacon of something.
then they want to be ignorant enough to think they can influence Elin about what to do, Thank Goodness Elin, is wise enough to be her own person and not live in some delusion, as if she does not know sex and wealth is like a hand and glove, in every profession existing. Including some of these office’s people work in.
Leave the woman alone, and Leave Tiger alone, if you like Golf, enjoy it, if you don’t then go some place and find another methods to get your emotional fix. Buy you a power drinks and get a dose of caffine and go sit down.
some of you people should ask yourself how many jobs has your ignorance cost, when the brands that back Tiger, sales drop and they lay off people, because their produce sales slump.
but you self centered ego maniac’s are the only ones on a moral crusade, and then comes Friday night, the same one is the freak of the week, at the first chance they get, or they go have and affair and blame in on the man they are with. American People, need to grow up, and get out of what other people do with their sex lives.and mind their own.

Mr. Bondy is a writer who never knows what it is he is talking about. Truly, next to Lupica, Bondy is a man who doesn’t understand his subject matter nor his audience. He flails at windmills a lot (I read the Daily News everyday) and as one who has exchanged emails with him it is apparent that, much like the out of control pony who’s grabbed the bit in his teeth, Bondy never knows when to let go. He chose to write an idiotic column, and much like Lupica, now accepts no comments on his column. Just another New York Know Nothing.

  23. james - Mar 17, 2010 at 7:49 PM

If women want equality, then we should get rid of all of those sexist events in the Olypmics and have only one event for each sport instead of two. That way women get a chance to compete on equal footing. Sadly, women wouldn’t ever win a medal. Gender is part of our nature – part of who we are – it’s not fair – it’s just the way it is. As long as women are being paid the same as a man for equal work, then they need to chill on the boys club stuff. Why not tell Spike TV that their programming is too ‘male-oriented’.

  24. bart - Mar 17, 2010 at 7:55 PM

One of the stupidest articles I’ve ever read.

  25. Sheeran, Patrick - Mar 17, 2010 at 7:58 PM

I wish I could work as a hack with no objective standards. If not for the net, this guy would be pouring green shakes today.
