'Big Baby' Davis almost landed 'The Blind Side' role?

Mar 8, 2010, 2:00 PM EDT

Which NBA player was reportedly among the finalists to play the Michael Oher role in Sandra Bullock’s Osacr winning vehicle The Blind Side? Would you believe Glen “Big Baby” Davis? Listening to Davis tell it, he just might have landed the role, had not a pesky little thing called the NBA season got in the way. Davis, who performed in several improv shows while at LSU, was approached to try out for the Oher role in 2007, and sent in an audition tape. And he got a callback, but was never able to come in and audition due to his schedule with the Celtics. Damn day job …

From a story by WEEI’s Jessica Camerato:

“A script [is harder to remember],” Davis said. “I read the script over and over and over, over and over and over with my girlfriend.”

“I never flew out because I didn’t have time,” he said. “I was playing, it was at the beginning of the season. That would’ve been tough. I would’ve had to shoot during the summer time, and that was a really important time.”

Much better to have an unknown playing the role of Oher. (Why didn’t Bullock, by the way, mention Oher in her acceptance speech?) However, I think that Steve Nash would have been a good choice to play Bullock’s son, S.J.

Oddly enough, I was on the callback list for the role as well, but they decided to go in a direction other than a 54-year old White guy who groans when he bends over to tie his shoes.

I would have auditioned but I’m too pretty to be on the screen at the same time as Sandra Bullock.
