Man, why don't beer trucks ever crash by my house?

Feb 28, 2010, 11:00 AM EDT

It must have been a dream come true for the students at Virginia Tech. A beer truck crashed outside Cassell Coliseum before the Virginia Tech-Maryland basketball game, dumping beer everywhere and turning the campus into a colossal beer bust of epic proportions.
Nah, just kidding. The truck actually just ran over a fire hydrant, rupturing a water main and cutting off water pressure to the arena which ultimately delayed the start of the game by three hours.
Unfortunately, there was no tasty, sudsy beverage spilled so there was no free beer for anyone. But it would have been cool if it did.

The Daily Press has the not-as-awesome-as-it-could-have-been details:

The truck knocked over a fire hydrant behind Cassell Coliseum shortly after 1 p.m., rupturing a water main and effectively cutting off water pressure inside the arena.

Without functioning toilets, Tech officials were forced to delay the game until the water main could be fixed. The start time was tentatively pushed back from 4 o’clock to 7:07 p.m. The game will still be televised live by Raycom Sports.

Eamonn Brennan from ESPN adds some clarifying information and the necessary perspective:

D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens has a photo of the, um, disaster. The hydrant clearly caught the worst of the encounter, no doubt thanks to the steel reinforced armor required for transporting beer, our nation’s most valuable and cherished resource. OK, OK — so it’s just a minivan. But hey, no beer spilled, no harm, no foul.

I beg to differ, Eamonn – if that’s your real name (it sounds made-up to me) – there was harm and there was, um, foul. In these trying economic times, in particular for college students, free beer may have been the perfect remedy for the sense of hopelessness those kids are feeling as they consider their future employment prospects. Kind of like the roofing crew in The Shawshank Redemption when the inmates got to enjoy a couple bottles of suds. You know, without all the beatings and forced sodomy, I guess. Huh. Anyway, free beer is free beer.
What’s that? It was a Bud Light van? Ugh. Nevermind. Who drinks that swill?
