PETA backs down after Tiger threatens to sue

Feb 26, 2010, 1:00 PM EDT

Because Tiger Woods’ lawyers were struggling with an overall record akin to that of the New Jersey Nets, it was fortunate for them that PETA came along when it did to boost their morale. The animal rights organization said today that it is backing down from a planned billboard campaign that featured Woods alongside the words: Too much sex can be a bad thing … for little tigers too. It was PETA’s way of saying that pet owners should spay or neuter their dogs and cats, and Tiger’s people were not amused. After much angry commotion within Tiger’s attorney beehive, a cease and desist letter was sent to PETA, which immediately retreated. They will not use Woods’ picture; but it didn’t take the animal rights organization long to regroup. Their new target? South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. Tee it up:

From The New York Post:

Lawyers for the horndog golfer threatened to sue the activists if they used his once-valuable image in their campaign urging owners to neuter their pets. So now PETA says it will feature another famous philanderer, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, with the possible tagline: “Your dog doesn’t have to go to South America to get laid.”

A PETA source told Page Six, “We were contacted by Tiger’s lawyers at IMG who kindly, but firmly, told us we were not authorized to use his image on the billboard, and would we desist. We agreed and have now turned the focus of our campaign to Mark Sanford.”

From The Peta Files:

Now that we’ve left Tiger off the billboard, we’re looking to replace him with another oh-so-familiar face: continent-hopping, scandal-producing Mark Sanford, governor of South Carolina. Our potential slogan? “Your dog doesn’t have to go to South America to get laid.”

The site also has a reader poll along with its post, presumably to stave off more negative publicity before it gets too loud. Right now the vote is running 54 percent con to 40 percent pro on running the ad.
But in a way, PETA has already won. The attention from the Woods detraction and now the switch to Sanford is more publicity than they ever could have hoped for. And all they had to do was spend a few minutes with Photoshop.
Lord only hopes that they don’t unleash Frenchy Cat next.

PETA sure wants it cake and eat it to. They are up in arms if someone taunts a four legged animal, what do they classify their parody as? PETA and their lawyers belong in a cage with the rest of their clients.

    PETA,
Nothing better than hunting, cooking and eating. In fact, every time you piss anyone off, I will take a rifle from the house rack and head to my backyard, 4000 acres, and shoot something for dinner.

PETA should just use the billboard with Tiger’s face blanked out, it would serve the same purpose and they wouldn’t have to cave for Wood’s lawyers.

Let’s hope that it’s one of your family members.

That reminds me, have you checked on sister-mama or daddy-brother recently, your last shot may have struck close to home.

Years ago when I was showing dogs, PETA showed up at the show in Albuquerque & starting letting dogs out of their crates because they said showdogs are abused. Really? They are probably the best cared for dogs on the planet: best food, best medical care, tons of attention… Fortunately, I had my crates padlocked & we managed to get at least one PETA person arrested. They should devote their time, energy & money to rescue organizations.

But then they wouldn’t get all of us talking about them..PETA is a joke and all they care about is publicity; good or bad they don’t care..Absolute whores for any kind of attention they can get and now they say they are going after a gov from SC..How nice that they just get to pick another “target”..Honestly, they should be censored…I know we should have freedom of speech but they hide behind that principle for their own gain and it isn’t right..
BTW, damn good steak tonight for me too…Peace

I don’t give a bat’s ass about what Tiger Woods does in his private life. What is with the obsession about him? The country is just so uptight about sex. This is between him and his family.

What does your son dying from prescription abuse have to do with Peta’s ad? There’s too many people holy than thou out there.

Karma is a bitch! Why can’t we advertise without all of this negativity??? I’m for a better, happier, peaceful world not one that creates more harm at the expense of ones mistakes!! Boo Peta! Save animals but it’s okay to stomp on your own kind??

I think sex is a good. I’ve been having sex all my life and don’t plan on stopping. Anyone sitting around not having sex are missing out on a good thing.
