Lindsey Vonn makes fun of Tiger Woods apology

Feb 22, 2010, 10:45 AM EDT

Time Magazine’s Sean Gregory has a pretty funny account of U.S. ski darling Lindsey Vonn mocking Tiger Woods’ televised press apology on Friday. Vonn didn’t catch the event live on TV; she walked into an interview room at Whistler just after it had concluded. But witnesses quickly clued her in on what had been said. They then described how Woods hugged several people in the front row of the group that had come to hear him speak, including his mother and a couple of other women. This prompted Vonn to quip:

“They’re like, ‘Yeah, you’re awesome, you go have that sex.’ “

But by the time she walks into a room at the USA House in Whistler for an interview, Woods’ nationally televised statement — they get NBC’s Seattle affiliate up in the Canadian mountains — has ended. “I really want to see that now,” says Vonn, loose and cheery despite wiping out the day before during the super combined event, denying her a chance for a second straight medal.

And like millions of Americans, Vonn can’t help poking fun at Woods’ staged event. When a member of her Vonn-tourage tells her that Woods gave a few friends hugs after ending his statement, she cracks, “They’re like, ‘Yeah, you’re awesome, you go have that sex.’ ” The room breaks into a laugh. Then she describes a skit she would want to perform if asked to host Saturday Night Live: picture Vonn at Woods’ podium, blue backdrop and all. “There’s something you don’t know about me,” Vonn says in a faux solemn, apologetic voice. “Tiger, you’re like my idol, and I too have a sex problem.” More laughter. “That would be freaking funny.”

Vonn was later asked about celebrity sports scrutiny in a post-Tiger Woods world.

“Well, I’m married — to her ski coach, Thomas Vonn, since 2007 — “so I don’t have that problem,” she says. “But, um, I guess he’s married too.” Then she turns serious. “I mean, I guess if you have secrets, you have an issue. I’ve kind of been open about everything.”

Vonn also said that she’d like to host Saturday Night Live.

“I’m hoping for it,” she says. “I’ve got to call [NBC Sports chairman] Dick Ebersol to see if SNL will have me. I have some ideas.”

Hmm, she might make a good Elin Nordegren.
In other news, I just realized that Tiger’s big speech on Friday preempted the first 30 minutes of The View. Uh oh. Those biddies are going to grind him into a fine powder today.

How sad we all rooting for Lindsey Vonn and comes out making fun some else tragedy. People that live glass houses shouldn’t throw. It’s Tiger in the hot seat today but it could be Lindsey’s turn tomorrow.

  3. Syndicate - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:19 PM

    CT Pats Fan
You are right on! This schlub goes around galavanting with upwards of a dozen women and a US skiier exercising her Freedom of Speech should “lose sponsors” and is “classless” Please! Give me a break! Lindsay’s comments were spot on and hilarious.
And for “mike” who said “when i find out who her sponsors are i will never buy one of those products until she retires.” WOW! So you’ll still buy the products she sponsors but just not until she retires?! ha ha ha WOW You are sounding like the typical American Idiot – You’re basically saying “I’m mad at her, but I’m only mad until she retires!”

  4. TheChoad - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:20 PM

You get em mike and lynda…you guys make me laugh. I’m never gonna buy anything from her sponsors again..that will show them you friggin twits. I’m sure her sponsers are gonna miss you not buying lifetime supplies of their products. I hope one of her sponsors isn’t Oscar Meyer because I would love both of you to chock on a weiner!

  5. JC - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:21 PM

If she was first at the time and there are only two skiers to go then for sure she is on the podium, duh !!!!!
All you haters can go and kiss Tiger’s feet, I’ll side with Lindsay.

  6. Steele - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:21 PM

It would have been best for her to say no comment, and left it alone.

  7. goose lake steve - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:23 PM

hey mike does tiger knows that you even exist?

  8. craig toensing - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:23 PM

If Vonn hosts SNL it will give her another opportunity to whine about her sore shin.

  9. Dude - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:26 PM

Hey Victo and Jac, he does owe somebody besides his wife and kids. Remember the sponsors who are/were paying him millions to represent himself and their product with some level of dignity, integrity and maturity? He failed. He is accountable to more than himself and his family in this case.

  10. Christy - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:27 PM

I thought she was funny. Tiger is a joke… it’s okay to laugh at a joke. If he had never tried to pass himself off as a moral upstanding person… if he just played the field and had a good time… no on would care what he did. Hypocrisy is the problem. People who claim to be moral and upstanding and are in reality as far from it as you can get, deserve to be the butt of jokes. Honestly, if Tiger hadn’t dragged a wife and kids into this and just was a playboy — and was upfront about it — I think most people would be fine with him. He could be the spokesman for Trojan and Jack Daniels!

  11. John Bancroft - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:28 PM

This girl is not very bright. She did not see the apology but felt competent to comment on it anyway. Very dumb move. I never liked Tiger Woods, but his apology was sincere and I think that he can and will change. I feel sorry for Vonn, in that she gains nothing from her uninformed comments and actually stands to loose much of her good girl image by weighing in on this issue without having actually seen Tiger deliver his apology.

  12. TheChoad - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:29 PM

Sad…you are that. This isn’t someone elses tragedy as you so put it. Earthquakes and Hurricanes can be tragedies, putting your pee-pee in 15 women that aren’t your wife is stupidity..Tiger is deserving of everything he is getting right now. Lindsey is expressing her “opinion”, so get off your high horse and move on.

  13. suej - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:30 PM

don’t be surprised if snl makes fun of that SI cover. I guess if you just pretend you want it it’s OK

  14. rjretnip - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:30 PM

It is very easy for those not directly effected by Tiger’s actions to state their opinions on the matter. After all isn’t this what people do best. However, when it is all said and done unless you have experienced the exact same situation only then does your opinions warrant merit. Think about it, how often when someone tells you about a situation do you reply “I know you feel/what you are going through, but in the end it will be okay” Unless you have experienced the same then how can you honestly say “I know you feel/what you are going through”? It’s always easier to be on the outside looking in.
In the end, the sun will still rise in the east and set in the west and it is Tiger who has to live with his mistake and the effect it has on those around him and his family. For me, it is just another story and will not cause me to loose sleep or change me in any way.

To all, Judge not les you be judged.

  16. marty - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:48 PM

I dont mind anyone being funny, she just said what came to mind. I am also not very upset with Tiger, I can imagine that most of the people he was apologizing to have done the same thing he has done or will in the future. I allways find those who run their mouths the most are the ones who are just waiting to get caught. People , get real, public persons, rich and famous men and women have the oppisite sex hanging on them all the time, once in a while there is a really good person who loves their spouse so much that they can pass up temptation, in most cases, its on, let the orgy’s begine.

  17. Tony - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:48 PM

Seriously Mike. Get off of your high horse! I’m a big “golf” fan of Tiger’s, but he has brought all of this on himself (he even admitted as much in his press conference.).

  18. vw - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:49 PM

Tiger’s bad consequences for cheating on his wife is not a TRAGEDY. Nobody died, just embarrassed. He made his choices and he has to deal with the results. And no its not over for Tiger just because he made a public apology. He brought whatever consequences on himself and that includes getting a satirical poke from other athletes and celebrities. Geeze we’re getting to a point that whenever anybody says anything its a freaking media circus. Lindsay was poking fun just like the late night show guys were poking fun, but since she is a married woman its not classy as deemed by some comments. Seriously, I think Tiger’s massive infidelity displays a deep misogyny, but when a guy pokes fun at Tiger its OK, but when a woman pokes fun it’s classless? That’s sexism.

  19. fleur delicious - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:51 PM

Dear Lindsey, the little skit you have created for SNL is not “freaking funny” at all. And if that is any indication of how clever & witty you are I really hope they don’t cave in to your begging them to let you host. FYI…typically people are invited to host the show….it is pretty pathetic & desperate of you to do the asking. And yes, karma is a bitch. So you should probably shut your big mouth poking fun at & criticizing others. You never know when it will happen to you. Your charmed, golden life can come crashing down around your head just like anyone else’s.
I can’t stand Tiger & his behavior, but he does not owe ANYBODY an apology, real or fake, other than his wife, family & any business contacts that he hurt financially. The rest of you whiners that think he OWES you a sincere, genuine apology (& that includes the porn stars he boinked) need to seriously get a life.

Young, Blonde and Vapid. BTW Jim, we can do without the organized religious colloquialisms.

  21. Pags - Feb 22, 2010 at 3:55 PM

    You’re an idiot

  22. George Peters - Feb 22, 2010 at 4:01 PM

You all are nuts. Tiger BS’ed is wife, children and fans for years with his squeaky clean image. If I was Elin I mite have thought about staying with Tiger if it was only one women but 8 or 9. Elin take the money and run. Maybe we are all to blame for his infidelity because we are the ones that made him famous and filthy rich. Look at Jack Nicholson he has probably had several hundred more women then Tiger but we still go see his moves. That’s because her doesn’t lie or try to hide it. When you pretend to be something other then your self your going to be the butt of someone’s joke.

  23. Lois - Feb 22, 2010 at 4:04 PM

I don’t think it was necessary for her to comment at all. If people would just mind their own business the world would be a better place.

  24. Double A - Feb 22, 2010 at 4:11 PM

Hey Mike–I just wanted you to know that I have been banging your wife. I hope you don’t mind.

  25. Sara S - Feb 22, 2010 at 4:12 PM

Hey, guess what? You people who AREN’T making fun of that scumbag’s apology are in the minority!
