Performing a complete one-eighty regarding his methods, Steve Wililams, who has been Tiger’s caddie since 1999, told the Australian newspaper The Sun-Herald that if any smart alecks in the gallery think for even one second that they are going to be able to get their licks in on Woods when he returns to competitive golf, they got another thing coming, because it isn’t going to happen.
Odd, isn’t it?
Williams, who is currently on vacation in Queensland with his family, discussed how things are going to go:
“My job is to give him the best information I can and get him around in the fewest possible strokes. And as I have always pointed out, it is to try and give him a level playing field.
“I won’t do anything differently. I won’t view him any differently. I will do the utmost best to be as professional as I can.”
Huh. Such a radical departure from the usual lackadaisical, borderline-careless way Williams typically has dealt with any potential distractions or nuisances – say, a photographer snapping a shot of Woods at an inopportune moment, for example – that could possibly affect Tiger on the course. Nope, in the past, Williams would simply shrug his shoulders and move on.
I guess it is all different now. Goodbye, happy-go-lucky, good-time, man-of-the-people Steve Williams. The man means means business now, so you better mind your Ps and Qs if you are fortunate enough to be in attendance when Tiger returns. Williams will not put up with any tomfoolery, skullduggery or shenanigans, or any associated behavior that can be described using the above antiquated terms, for that matter. Although I do understand that monkeyshines and hijinks might still be deemed acceptable, which is nice.
