Smashing: Minnesota Gov. makes Elin golf club reference

Feb 19, 2010, 8:00 PM EDT

We’ll forgive you if you’re unaware of Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty’s speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference today. It wasn’t exactly choice timing for the Republican, to try and compete with Tiger Woods’ big press statement from Florida. But the Guv did the best he could under the circumstances, even hitching a ride on some of that free Tiger publicity with this rather amusing line from his speech:

“I think we can learn a lot from that situation, not from Tiger, but from his wife. She said, ‘I’ve had enough.’ She said, ‘No more.’ I think we should take a page out of her playbook and take a nine iron and smash the window out of big government. We’ve had enough.”

So Elin’s Thanksgiving Night SUV assault is now in the political lexicon. Lord help us all.

From CBS News:

Pawlenty, speculated to be a strong contender for the GOP 2012 presidential nomination, made the remark during what was seen as a key speech as he seeks to court conservative activists ahead of a possible run. But he was obviously cognizant that his speech would likely be overshadowed today by Tiger Woods’ first public remarks since it was revealed last year that he had a number of extramarital affairs.

Was he hoping that his remark wouldn’t leave the room? Not likely, even on Tiger Woods Press Statement Day. especially since the Democrats soon crafted a response.

Brad Woodhouse, communications director for the Democratic National Committee, said, “Tim Pawlenty today said that the country should take a nine iron to the government — but instead all he did today was take a nine iron to his own credibility.”

By the way, I first heard of Pawlenty’s remark via a new blog, Trailing Tiger, which is entirely devoted to Tiger Woods news. Pawlenty has it bookmarked, I’m sure.
