Vikings fans woo Favre with desperate billboard entreaty

Feb 9, 2010, 6:00 PM EDT

Does Hattiesburg, Mississippi sit on some fault line in the space-time continuum of which I’m unaware? First Tiger Woods and then broadcaster Steve Phillips are said to have attended sex addiction therapy in the tiny hamelt, Elin Nordegren supposedly bunked at Brett Favre’s house, and now this. A billboard has popped up on U.S. 90 West imploring Brett Favre to play another season for the Vikings. A “Brett Favre Appreciation” Facebook group started by Minneapolis radio DJ Jay “Strangelove” Tappe has 84,000 members at last count, and is responsible for the electronic billboard, whose other message is “Bring Back The Macarena”*.
* = May not be true.

From the Randball Blog at the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Just spoke with Minneapolis resident Jay Tappe, who started the Facebook group. He sent an image of the billboard and said, among other things, “Anything we can do to get (Favre) back here. … We all fell in love with him.” Also, donations to the cause of … well … bringing Favre back can be made right here, e-mailer Kelly says. It’s not exactly Haiti, but you have to believe in SOMETHING.

SECOND UPDATE: KFAN is also planning on putting up a billboard in Hattiesburg, possibly as soon as Friday. It will read: DEAR BRETT, DEANNA & FAMILY, THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MINNESOTA. WE’D LOVE TO HAVE YOU BACK. VIKINGS FANS 4-EVER.

It’s sure to be the most effective billboard campaign since this.

I agree with you. Brett Favre is the best QB. He plays for the team and you can tell just by watching him that he loves the game. I am a GB fan but will always be a Favre fan.

This is great!!!!!! If Brett comes back, there is one more reason to watch football and the Vikings. He is too good to retire. The best game I watched last season was the GB Minny game.

First of all post # 68 and I’m sure others is pure BUNK. But most importantly, I too, despite being from Green Bay and having bled Green and Gold my entire life until THE PACKERS SCREWED FAVRE OVER (educate yourselves, troy et al!)I am not a true Vikings Fan. Partly because I have norse heritage, partly because their fans are the BEST when they come to Green Bay for games, and mostly because the Vikings gave Brett the respect and opportunity he had EARNED in Green Bay, I am now a Vikings fan for life! I will never have the same respect for the Oneida Indian/Green Bay Packers since they allowed such attrocious and malicious mismanagement into our city and team. I KNOW Curly Lambeau (at bit of a “rounder” himself but a man of honor in the end) is turning over in his grave, as are many past Packers greats over what Thompson (our village idiot) and McCarthy did to Favre. I will never forgive it, and I DO hope Favre returns to beat Green Bay again and again, and to get that Superbowl Ring in royal purple and gold he so richly deserves, along with the rest of a magnificent Vikings organization. Now that “America’s Team” has had their day in the sun and are no longer the Ain’ts I hope the media hype and officals can all settle down and we can get back to playing real football in the real world–if there’s even a season next year.

I’m a packer fan and would like to see Brett return. I don’t think he will. The Saints showed the world how to beat a superior team with an aging quarterback. You hit him, and hit him, and then hit him again. Brett never took a beating like that before and if he comes back he can expect more of the same. The days of the gentle push from the blitzing linebacker are gone. He can’t play in cold weather and when he gets hit enough he gets cold feet. He is fun to watch and he’s got that arm but I just don’t think he’d make it through another season intact. Nevertheless, it would be fun to see him try.

Hated him when he was a packer.
Hated him when he was a jet.
Hated him when he WAS a viking.
the word humble does not exist in this guy’s vocabulary!

  6. RESIGNED BUT RESOLUTE - Feb 10, 2010 at 2:18 PM

Athletes who retire and come back and who then excel are rare. Michael Jordan did not pull it off. Neither did Brett Favre. But, Brett did it, or didn’t, for a different reason. What is the difference between ex-Bear Rex Grossman and Favre? Luck. I loved to watch Brett, but his recklessness has been his doom too, too often. Just as Grossman got the Bears to the Superbowl, so, too, may Brett get the Vikings next year. But, I doubt it. You just cannot roll the dice and win that often. The man is a gambler and gamblers too often lose.

You have a right to your own opinion when it comes to Brett Farve leaving Green Bay.But you need to do your research before making your comments.Green Bay wanted a younger quarterback. So they started putting the your getting to old b.s in his head to get him to retire. When in reality all he wanted to do was play the game that he seems to love so much.Go back in the NFL history books and you will see that there was a QB I cant remember his name. But he was 49 yrs old before he gave up playing.I dont know how old you are.But when you start getting older and people start telling you that you are to old to do something you love. Are you going to give up,go crawl in a hole and die some where or Are you going to fight back and say Im the one who decides when Im to old to do something????I think that Green Bay Fans are making to big of a deal about Brett being a trader. He’s not.Ya’ll pushed him out so that you could have a youger guy in his place.Aaron Rogers is a good QB.Because he had the time to sit back, watch and learn from Brett.Brett is staying true to his heart and the love of a game that has been very good to him and I dont think that makes him a trader. Before this year I wasnt even a Brett Farve fan.I have been a big Dallas fan my whole 29 yrs of life. But I believe in standing up for someone when they are getting attacked for no good reason.

Get this old thing out of here.. he is as old as dirt, and the same peronallity to..a true one man team, he is for himself only.. I be from minnesota, but only watched him when they played the Packers, Bears, teams that would try to sack him as much as they could.. I loved the 4th quater int. just like bretney to do something like that. one more T.D for the record, only that time was an int.. got love for his arrogance… that is ALL he has….will never watch a cheese-kings game again till he be gone…bretney an x cheese head, and the king off the vikings, aka cheese kings)

You are not real savvy on stats. Look at his overall work during the season then re-evaluate your statement.

  10. Mike D - Feb 10, 2010 at 2:31 PM

Brett you are a real quarterback, the best in my opinion. I know you have another year in you, by the way I’m from New England.

Green Bay fans claim to be the best,, but their villifying Favre’s character, calling him a traitor for “going with the enemy” is so naive. calling him selfish,, check with the “make a wish” people to see how many kids he helped with his charities and donations to this fine group. when Katrina hit he flew blankets, food and water to the people of MIssissippi. His charities are well known, but apparently not by ex brett favre fans,, so get off the character assassinations and google him for exploits besides his football stats. HIs worst crime?? wanting to continue to play football. The packers demanded an answer two weeks after the season ended when the bruises hadn’t yet healed so he “retired” at their urging, he knew they wanted him out so he gave it to them but once he was rested he decided he was the one to decide whether he could still play a decent game/season. vince lombardi “deserted” Green Bay and went to the Redskins, Longwell went to the vikings, Darren sharper went to the saints and played against favre at the superbowl. I don’t recall hearing any of these guys being called a traitor! Football is a BUSINESS, players change teams every day, they are dumped when somebody better comes along or a better deal for them comes along. It’s not about staying with the fans that love them!! Brett Favre has fans all over the U.S, players on other teams love him! the sportscasters love him, he makes their job so much easier because Favre makes the game interesting and FUN! He is the one to decide whether to come back or not and packer fans should grow up and realize how often it is that players and teams go their separate ways all the time!! And it would behoove fans also to rmember the many many sundays when he made Packer football so exciting, for so many years,,appreciation for that is in order.

Brett Favre is an honest, fair, and very talented Quarterback (not to mention handsome). Wherever he goes, success follows. To play another year? Either way suits you well. If your intuition says “play another year,” go for it. If not, we all love ya, and will remember you as one of the best forever…(of course, you’ll be in the Hall of Fame…so those who never saw you play will read about you.) Go with your intuition.

This is WILD! I can see that billboard from my shop! I live and work in Hattiesburg. I actually wonder how out of the 6.4 billion towns in the U.S. we seem to keep having interesting stuff happen. Tiger Woods is staying in Pine Grove like 3 miles from here. Brett Farves agent lives about 500 yards from my house and Brett lives about a mile away.

  14. JA - Feb 11, 2010 at 9:41 AM

Its Highway 98 west, not highway 90.

  15. Mathias - Feb 11, 2010 at 2:53 PM

Couldn’t have said it better. He’s a narcissist, pure and simple. Every play has been a “me” play. He couldn’t allow Longwell to be the one that got them in the super bowl. He couldn’t allow the spotlight to be off him for a moment. That’s why his legacy is tarnished. That and he’s a giant douche.

Well, Bully for you young man. But this isn’t Playboy Forum so go tell your mommy that the older lady touched you on your pee-pee and find some other forum to boast about your exploites!!

  17. Mark H - Feb 22, 2010 at 9:12 PM

Thus that’s why he is so good. Super high achievers usually have big egoes dill hole. That’s why we’re not commenting on a story about your sorry ass!

  18. harley guy - Feb 25, 2010 at 5:24 PM

Brett is a great player. I was never a packer fan ( from Illinois ), but supported him in MN when they started to pick on him about his age. I guess age discrimination is ok in football. Keep playing Brett!!!!! You our a great sportsman.
Now, did you hear that Brett was secretly talking to Sara Lee. Going to open a chain of Brett Favre bakerys. They will feature 5 turnovers…..
