Vikings fans woo Favre with desperate billboard entreaty

Feb 9, 2010, 6:00 PM EST

Does Hattiesburg, Mississippi sit on some fault line in the space-time continuum of which I’m unaware? First Tiger Woods and then broadcaster Steve Phillips are said to have attended sex addiction therapy in the tiny hamelt, Elin Nordegren supposedly bunked at Brett Favre’s house, and now this. A billboard has popped up on U.S. 90 West imploring Brett Favre to play another season for the Vikings. A “Brett Favre Appreciation” Facebook group started by Minneapolis radio DJ Jay “Strangelove” Tappe has 84,000 members at last count, and is responsible for the electronic billboard, whose other message is “Bring Back The Macarena”*.
* = May not be true.

From the Randball Blog at the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Just spoke with Minneapolis resident Jay Tappe, who started the Facebook group. He sent an image of the billboard and said, among other things, “Anything we can do to get (Favre) back here. … We all fell in love with him.” Also, donations to the cause of … well … bringing Favre back can be made right here, e-mailer Kelly says. It’s not exactly Haiti, but you have to believe in SOMETHING.

SECOND UPDATE: KFAN is also planning on putting up a billboard in Hattiesburg, possibly as soon as Friday. It will read: DEAR BRETT, DEANNA & FAMILY, THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MINNESOTA. WE’D LOVE TO HAVE YOU BACK. VIKINGS FANS 4-EVER.

It’s sure to be the most effective billboard campaign since this.

I think that’s wonderful! I’m a Packer fan who thinks Brett Favre is one of the best QB’s, ever, in the NFL. Bart Starr was my hero so I’ve been around and seen my share. I think Fran Tarkenton was a great QB, too, but not up to Favre’s standard. Both were “show-makers” and both made the fans want to come back for another game! I hope he plays ’til he’s 50+.

I’d love to see Brett come back another season he is one hell of a ball player and a good sport!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Brutal Republic - Feb 10, 2010 at 10:52 AM

Agreed. I’m a Bears fan, but in the playoffs I was going for the Vikings all the way. Brett deserved it. Didn’t earn it though. I hope he gets another chance.

We have always been “Favre” fans. We enjoyed watching him play for the packers; in fact that was always my husband’s team, until they treated Bret the way they did. After all he did for that franchise and to be dismissed like a worn out sock. Now we are Viking fans and will always bee “Bret” fans. We hope he comes back for another year.

  5. Linda - Feb 10, 2010 at 10:55 AM

Brett – please come back! You will always be my Ironman Hero!!

  6. Jack - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:00 AM

I’m male, 26, and just this Christmas had a brief encounter with a mature woman. It was wonderful. We met via internet dating on this site:
S u g a r mo m m a M e e t. C o m- a good way to meet like-minded people, and she actually approached me first. It just so happens I like older women and she likes men around my age. We had an amazing day and later on she joined me at a hotel. It was like a fantasy come true. Amazing company, amazing sex too and a really warm and loving woman. She will turn 36 this month, and my goodness what a connection we had that day.

I am also a life long Packers fan from the time Bart Starr played. I am also a Brett Farve Fan, so I was a Minnesota fan this year for the first time. Football will never be the same when Brett retires. This past season was his best ever. Please play again next year, Brett!

  8. Steve in NC - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:02 AM

I moved away from MN 28 years ago and since then lost interest in watching MN Vikings football. Part of the reason was more important things like spending time with my daughters and family, plus I spent most weekends in fall/winter hunting. However, Brett Farve’s return last season gave me all the reason to begin watching them again and I watched every game I could and reconnected with friends around the games. He is a true competitor and I’d hate to see him not give it another year in MN after taking them so far in his first year! Was great to see the Vikes mgmt finally make a serious investment in a quality quarterback and a winner!

  9. Jerry - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:02 AM

I am a Cowboy fan, but have been a Bret fan lately, he as Michael Jordon brings the joy and fun in watching. Plus I am a 50 year old kid who doesn’t want to grow up either. He still has it so if he can I am with him all the way

  10. Jeannie - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:02 AM

Brett Favre plays for no one but HIMSELF. He is egotistical, self absorbed and just plain spoiled. No one can say that he isnt a great quarterback(except for that interception thing) but lets get real. He is good…yes but also lucky that he has been able to play so long. He accepts all the adorations of fans and then like a fickle lover he can turn his back and never look back. No one says he should stay in one place forever, but remember those fans that helped you get to where you are today. Yes I think he is a very selfish “me” player. Good luck Minnesota…….you can have him and all his drama. DONT BE TOO DISAPPOINTED WHEN HE THROWS AN INTERCEPTION IN A BIG GAME AND THEN THREATENS RETIREMENT. BOO HOO BRETT. An ex Brett fan and new aaron Rogers fan

  11. Packer/Saints fan - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:04 AM

The Favre business is a two way street. It was as much his fault as it was Ted Thompson’s fault the way it played out. Who could possibly expect a team to wait around for a prima donna to make up his mind as to whether he wants to come back. The fans certainly were on his side, and as far as many of us are concerned he let us down by his actions
By the way, the Saints beat him up – sorry he was so battered, but the Saints prevailed. I’m from Wisconsin – will always be a Packer fan no matter what – but we live in Louisiana and we love “Dat”.
They beat the Colts and we love ‘em.

Brett Favre is a warrior. One of the most recognizable and likeable men in sports. Should he desire to return for the 2010 season then we would love to have him. Brett has begun a new chapter in his career with the Minnesota Vikings and it should not end after only one season. He signed a 2 year contract with the Vikings. Brett you are an inspiration to people everywhere that just because they say you can not do something or because they say you are too old, doesn’t mean that they are right. The Brett Favre story can continue on for one more year. It will be a terrific way for the fans of the league to enjoy another year of football before the dreaded lockout that is on the horizon. Even if we do not win the Superbowl come back Brett, we Love You!

  13. Pain - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:07 AM

I was hoping for a Colts, Viking Super Bowle. Im a Colts fan and would love to see Farve come back! He is a great fit for the Vikings!

  14. rich sorice - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:10 AM

I’m a packer fan all my life. since Vince Lombardi! I hope he comes back and the last thing i hope he will remember is a packer getting off him on a sack!! the hell with this benedict arnold. He is a piece of garbage thats ready for the trash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. K - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:12 AM

We too took the Brett side in the great Divorce. I am a former Packers fan as well, I donated all my Packer stuff to goodwill. & I became a Saints fan, (but I am a Brett fan first) I had a heck of a time when the Vikings played the Saints(but I was pulling for Brett)
My husband was a fan of the Tampa Bay team for years, and they too made some mistakes that caused them to loose fans. But nothing as horrible as what GB did , nor as Public! I hope Brett comes back this year & the Vikings get their shot again…..I believe they can do it & I am certain they’ve earned it!!

  16. Tori - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:13 AM

Brett Favre won the respective of the nation. He pulled the Vikings together and they played a great game. So we didn’t win,but didn’t we here in MN. witness great games. He plays with heart and decentcy. Can’t he come back as a coach or a mentor ?

  19. Chris - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Treated the way he was??? How many years did he make the Packers put their planning on hold with his will he or won’t he bs? He’s already done it to the Vikings, and here comes round 2. He’s a good quarterback, but he finished the Vikings season just like he did so many Packer. He wanted to make player acquisition decisions for the Packers, and now he refuses to come out of a game when told by the Head Coach?? As well as he plays (sometimes) he needs to realize he’a an employee

  20. Dan - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:30 AM

I’ve been a Packers fan all my life and I cheered for Favre for many years but when he retired I still remain a Packers fan. What a lot of people on here forget is that he did announce his retirement and the Packers decided to move on. Rodgers was on the last year of his contract and the Packers needed to make a commitment to him as their starting QB or lose him. He has proven Thompson right with two outstanding seasons. The Packers just need a few more players to make a serious run at the Super Bowl. Go PACK Go !!!!

  21. Jeff - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:31 AM

First of all, Brett will be back because anyone that knows the man knows how self absorbed he is and how bad he needs the spotlight. Second, I laugh at these so called Packer fans and Chicago fans that rooted for Minnesota. I am a Cowboy fan and don’t care if Roger Staubach played for the Redskins, I wouldn’t root for them. Obviously y’all just loved the bandwagon when the Packers and Bears won but like the Vikings now. Please don’t disgrace true fans by calling yourself one. Read the definition of the word fanatic. You may be a fan of Brett but you obviously have never been a fan of those teams.

  22. jeff - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:33 AM

Brett , packers fans fear you. they are trying to embarrass you in to retirement. it amazes us VIKING FANS the way they have treated you after all you did for them. whatever you decide, its alright with us but yeah we would love one more year. you are the man!

  23. margie - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:35 AM

I have read all the comments. Favre is a very very good player one of the best. Favre should go back to MN and enjoy playing just like he always does. I am not a Packer or MN fan. Redskins (Deadskins this season) fan and always will be but I love looking at all the games and anytime Favre is playing I watch and is always amazed how well he plays. He has heart and when you play any sport if you do not have heart do not play. Too many times players get the big bucks and then you hear that they are involved in something illegal and I think that sucks no matter what. Favre is a role model for all and I do love him for how well he plays the games and his sportmanship.

  24. Andee - Feb 10, 2010 at 11:36 AM

It is sad that you are so “narrow-minded” and so full of hate. I have been a die-hard Packer fan since 1962 when I went to the UW at Madison. The great Bart Starr was QB. The Packers went through the touch years in the 1970′s and 1980′s. Brett Favre was their savior in 1992 and has, since, entertained millions of fans. I totally support Aaron Rodgers and truly believe he will be one of the best upcoming QBs in our time. Having said that, one cannot help but admire the devotion, charisma, competitiveness, guidance, passion for the game and unherald records earned by Farve. These were earned solely on talent not on the “ME” factor. Say what you want about his personality but unless you know the player, you should keep your comments to yourself. I have no problem loving Rodgers and Favre at the same time. Talent should be recognized and that is the only reason Favre rates as he does as one of the best, if not the best QB in the NFL. People like you try desparately to bring others “down” so you look “bigger.” God has a plan for Favre and Favre is handling it well. What is your problem?

    Brett belongs with the Pack…!
