I get that with the big game only one day away, almost everyone, to one extent or another, is afflicted with Super Bowl fever and the demand for offbeat stories regarding the game is at a premium. Keeping that in mind, I’m sorry, but this following story is just plain bananas.
Allow me to introduce you to Amani, a 37-year-old female gorilla from the Fort Worth Zoo. Zookeepers, after having meerkats perform the duty last year, decided to let Amani make the Super Bowl pick this season on behalf of the zoo’s animals.
Video of how Amani made her selection (and who she picked! Whee!) after the jump.
Zookeepers gave her the option of two papier-mache footballs filled with peanuts, popcorn, grapes and other gorilla treats.
After showing brief disinterest, Amani grabbed the Saints football, inspected it and then smashed it on to a rock to release her treats.
So, there you have it, Saints fans: a gorilla at a zoo in Texas arbitrarily picked your team to win Super Bowl XLIV by selecting a football-shaped container of treats. On the other hand, to all of you Colts fans out there: apparently, your Super Bowl championship dreams are not to be. At the same time, it should be taken into account that Amani is female and perhaps her limited grasp of the ins and outs of the game of football can be attributed to the lack of a prominent saggital crest.
What do you mean? That’s solid primatological humor right there. The bit killed on my “Monkey See Monkey Do” comedy tour of the nation’s zoos. Although I wish they wouldn’t have placed the stage near the spider monkey habitat – notorious poop throwers, to put it mildly.
