Come on, you knew that sooner or later there would have to be some kind of connection. Britain’s biggest sex scandal and America’s biggest, together at last! The London Daily Mail did some sleuthing and found an old interview that embattled, oversexed Chelsea captain John Terry did with Football Punk Magazine in September, and came up with a couple of interesting nuggets. First, Terry emphasized the importance of teammates being honest with each other, which happened to be at the same time he had started an affair with the girlfriend of now former Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge. Then, this happened:
Terry finished the interview by saying his favourite sportsman is Tiger Woods, himself embroiled in a sex scandal after betraying his wife.
Break out the picks and shovels, we’ve hit a vein of pure irony.
Britain has left the Tiger Woods saga in the rear view mirror some weeks ago, but our foggy cousin to the east can’t get enough of the drama surrounding Terry; who allegedly cheated on his wife with a teammate’s girlfriend, French actress/model Vanessa Perroncel. To add to the intrigue, Perroncel was also good friends with Terry’s wife, Toni. Now the London Telegraph is reporting that Perroncel has been offered as much as $300,000 to tell her story, just as news is breaking that three other Chelsea players have been playing on her pitch, as they say (she denies it). This is so big in England that several sources have speculated it could seriously impact the national team’s showing in the World Cup.
Then one newspaper found this September magazine interview.
The cheating national team captain claimed every member of Fabio Capello’s squad was truthful with one another.
He said in a magazine interview: “We all have to be honest. That’s the way I want it to be.”
But the same month he began bedding teammate Wayne Bridge’s ex love Vanessa Perroncel, 33, behind his back.
“It’s not just about me because I’m captain, we all have to be honest because we all want the same thing, and that’s to win,” he said.
Terry, 29, also made an odd remark when asked what was the best trick he had ever played on a teammate. He replied: “There’s been many. But the best is definitely not for publication!”
English national team coach Fabio Capello flew from Italy to London on Thursday to meet with Terry and possibly strip him of his captaincy.
An England insider said: “He wants to see Terry face-to-face. It’s a decision unlike any he has made.”
Bookies have been flooded with bets on Wayne Rooney to replace Terry as captain. Ladbrokes said “We have been amazed.”
I like the cross-Atlantic symmetry of these twin sex scandals, and believe that every large nation should consider having one. It sells newspapers and gets tongues wagging in local bars and pubs, thus stimulating the economy. And since no one is actually physically harmed, what’s the hurt in that?
And when one of these athletes comes out with a sex tape in 3D, then we’ll really have something.
