Live from Dubai: Tom Watson takes more swipes at Tiger

Feb 4, 2010, 10:00 AM EDT

Evidently pleased with the response he got last week to his criticism of Tiger Woods, creaky, onion-belted golf legend Tom Watson is taking his act on the road. In the United Arab Emirates for the Dubai Desert Classic, Watson on Wednesday let loose on Woods for the second time in six days, saying that his behavior on and off the course leaves a lot to be desired. Key quote: “I feel that he has not carried the same stature that other great players that have come along like Jack [Nicklaus], Arnold [Palmer], Byron Nelson, the Hogans, in the sense that there was language and club throwing on the golf course.”

“Its your tee time, Mr. Watson.”
“Wait, Tiger also has bad breath! (is carried off by officials) Wait, I’m not done talking about Tiger!”
Watson made waves last week when, during an interview with an NBC Kansas City TV affiliate, he touched briefly on Tiger’s infidelities and behavior on the course, saying that Woods needed “to show some humility.” On Wednesday he expanded on those themes.

“I’ll let the cat out of the bag,” Watson said ahead of the Dubai Desert Classic. “Tiger has to take ownership of what he has done. He must get his personal life in order. I think that’s what he’s trying to do. And when he comes back he has to show some humility to the public.

“I would come out and I would do an interview with somebody and say, ‘You know what? I screwed up. And I admit it. I am going to try to change. I am trying to change. I want my wife and family back.”

Watson then gave a critique on Woods’ course etiquette.

“I feel that he has not carried the same stature that other great players that have come along like Jack [Nicklaus], Arnold [Palmer], Byron Nelson, the Hogans, in the sense that there was language and club throwing on the golf course,” Watson said. “You can grant that of a young person that has not been out here for a while. But I think he needs to clean up his act and show the respect for the game that other people before him have shown.”

According to at least one source, former PGA champ Bob Rosburg, who was quoted in the book Wicked Game: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and the Story of Modern Golf, comparing Woods to Palmer may have been a mistake. (See page 96).

LISTEN..we ALL know that Tiger’s troubles are “self-inflicted”…
and I DO AGREE that he has to STOP having temper tamtrums on the course…after all…he’s not a child…but truthfully, I haven’t watched golf since he left and will wait for his return.
Love Mickelson..but..need to see some FIRE from him…nice guy…

Mr. Watson, I presume you don’t live in a glass house and that you are perfect in every way there is. Good for you!

Mr. Watson, no skeletons in your closet? Anybody out there willing to prove that Mr. Watson is as human as they come? Pictures, video, anecdotes any or all would suffice. Please come forward so no one can say that Mr. Watson is not human. Although the way he is handling Mr. Woods failures is certainly inhuman and indecent. For shame Mr. Watson, for shame!

    Gron
Now that we have heard from Tom Watson, I guess all we need now is a statement from the Pope.
Instead of piling on the bandwagon, why don’t his so called friends, keep their mouths shut, unless of course they are self
appointed judges and jury, on a suject that is none of their business.
Tiger has made some mistakes, no one is perfect but when it comes to golf he is closer than anyone in the history of golf and it is
    not even close!!!!

I think that Tom is right. If you cheat on your wife, then you would cheat on any other person that you come in contact with. Get off Tom’s ass and get on Tiger and quit making remarks that maybe everthing is not his fault.

Everyone needs to get off Tiger’s back. All the comments and and Tiger gashing has gotten totally out of hand. I love golf and only watch Tiger, or any Pro, for the Golf period. Their personal lives or of no interest. That’s the adult way to look at this. what he does off the course has little of no interest me!!

  9. Bucknut - Feb 5, 2010 at 8:40 AM

Right on Tom! That being said it’s time for you to shut up. We all know how you feel about the situation so there is no need to remind us again, ever.
It’s about time some people got on Tiger’s ass for his behavior. He’s has gotten a pass this whole time with his childish antics on the course. Don’t forget sending the caddy in to snatch cameras in the gallery. Too bad he didn’t emulate Jack’s behavior as well as chasing his records. What a baby.
What all of you Tiger lovers forget is that he is a celebrity. The lack of a private life is part and parcel with the fame and all of the money. You cannot expect to turn it on and off like a faucet. If you want to be left alone while walking down the street take a job at McDonalds and ask me if I want fries with that. I can assure you that no one will ever bother you. Plus don’t put yourself out in the public eye as “Mr. Family Man” when you’re anything but. No one would care what Tiger did if he was single and presented himself as a player with the ladies. It’s no different than your typical politician who spouts family values while begging for your vote and then goes to see his mistress when he’s done.

Tom, we all fall down and hopefully we all get up. Some times the fall happens in private and no one knows the details but, we get up. I never helps to kick a man when he is down. Let him without…Cast the first stone. Someone said “if you don’t have anything good to say” you know the rest.

DO ANY OF YOU PEOPLE THAT RUN TIGER DOWN REMBER IN THE BIBLE,WHEN THE PEOPLE WERE GOING TO STONE THE PROSTITUTE TO DEATH, THAT JESUS SAID,YOU WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE. AS FAR AS I KNOW,JESUS WAS THE ONLY PERSON ON EARTH WITHOUT SIN. I WILL WATCH GOLF AGAIN WHEN TIGER STARTS PLAYING AGAIN.

  12. jj - Feb 5, 2010 at 12:23 PM

Ok,Tom and rest of anti Tiger people. Enough is enough. Tiger didn’t kill anybody nor committed any crime. The girls knew Tiger’s married and they chose to flirt with him. Please shut ___ ____ up. I’m waiting for Tiger’s return so I can start watching golf again on TV.
