All-white basketball league's founding nutjob speaks out

Jan 25, 2010, 6:00 PM EDT

Promoter Don “Moose” Lewis says he wants to start an all-white pro basketball league, that much we know. What we don’t know is if he’s serious, or just out for publicity (I vote for the latter). Now, perhaps, we’ll get some answers, as Moose was unleashed on 790 The Zone radio in Atlanta this morning. In Moose’s league, one must be Caucasian, a U.S. citizen, and prove that both parents are of Caucasian descent in order to play. The league will be split into four divisions: The Goebbels Division, the Jim Crow, the Jimmy the Greek and the Jefferson Davis. I may be kidding about that part.

Audio here.

“Well I mean because we are saying white, U.S. born players doesn’t say that you have to be white Judaeo-Christian. You can be a white Muslim, Jew, Catholic or whatever. You can be any type of person of color to own a team if as long as you are born in the United States. So I mean if that is a racial thing then why would we allow people of color to actually own a team?”

Now however, I will give you guys a tip on what has happened. This has evolved into a reality show. We are talking to two groups now to turn this whole thing into a reality show. But at the end of the year, our white all-stars will play a group of black minor league all-stars. The name of the show being ‘Bro-ball vs. Snow-ball.”

Yikes. The interview gets a little testy, so make sure that you listen all the way through. Lewis says that he has four people interested in owning a team. Which I kind of doubt. Key quote from Lewis: “You guys are trying to turn this into a racial thing and it’s not.” Oh, of course not.

I’ve read comparisons of the potential whites-only basketball league with BET or affirmative action programs.
That line of reasoning is faulty because a channel like BET and programs like AA were enacted to combat unequal opportunity. In order to argue for a whites-only league, you’d have to argue that whites are given an unequal opportunity to succeed in basketball, not merely that there just aren’t enough of them in the NBA.
Are whites indeed discriminated against in succeeding in basketball? If the documentary “Hoop Dreams” is of any indication, it would seem that the best high school basketball programs are in prep schools that have white majority populations. The best basketball universities are also white-majority; it’s not as if Howard University and Morehouse University are hoarding all the blue chip recruits out of high school.
So unless it can be proven that whites are discriminated against in basketball, this does not share the spirit of affirmative action.

I recently posted that Blacks only want honesty. We are tired of being excluded or racially profiled or victims of police abuse etc, because of obvious racism, that is ALWAYS denied by the perpetrators when they are confronted. I always say dont piss on my leg and tell me its rain.
With that being said, I applaud Moose’s HONESTY! Hey man, if you dont want me at your gym or playing in your league, tell me AND I WONT COME! Now I am not saying this is ok in all arenas. I still think Blacks need equal opportunity and equal protections as everyone else in America, but honestly, seperate but equal isnt all that bad.

Whatever… but who needs to see a psychiatrist, The founder, the fans, the owners, the players, or the head doctor. OK… Money can be made. People want to be entertained, but entertainment and sells is all this would ever be. I guess that’s what Capitalism is all about.
All righty then, let the games begin!
