Mississippi State football recruits visit strip club during recruiting trip?

Jan 19, 2010, 2:00 PM EST

I knew we wouldn’t have to wait long for our next social networking failscapade. Three high football recruits who made verbal commitments to Mississippi State had a little more fun than they were supposed to have during their official recruiting visit, it seems. Once they got home from the trip, all three posted accounts of visiting a strip club near Starkville, allegedly.
Jameon Lewis, a running back from Tylertown, Miss., Jay Hughes, a running back from Hattiesburg, Miss., and Robert Firebird Johnson, a running back/receiver from Hattiesburg, all made comments on their Facebook pages referring to a visit to The Pony, apparently, a rather notorious strip club. One of the Facebook pages shows MSU recruits in Bulldog jerseys.
Facebook details following the jump.

Entries from the players’ respective Facebook accounts, via Mr. SEC (link NSFW, unfortunately).
Robert Johnson:

Robert Firebird Johnson Had fun at Mississippi State this weekend…….. THE PONYYYYY

Jameon Lewis:

Jameon Lewis AINT BEEN TOO LONG MADE IT HME … MAN WE HAD SUM FUN ET STATE BUT MY FAVORITE PART WAS WEN WE WENT TO (THE PONY) OH YEAH!!! … BIG UPS TO MI BIG DAWG PLAYERS BUT APPRECIATE DA HOST C. MITCHELL N L. PERKINS .. J. LEWIS#?

Jay Hughes:

Jay Hughes dad lots of fun at state this weekend….POOONNNYYYYYYYYY!

From Hughes’ profile on BulldogBlitz.com: Jay Hughes enjoys visit 1/18/2010. Jay Hughes’ commitment to Mississippi State last month was pretty much a forgone conclusion and this past weekend’s official visit could be described as just a formality.
Listen, nobody — with the possible exception of Charlie Sheen — should ever describe a visit to a strip club as “just a formality.” That’s simply not right.
(Fun fact: Fred Smoot went to Mississippi State).
Pro and college athletes may be getting wise about putting their shenanigans on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, etc., for all the world to see … but we’ve still got a neverending supply of high school athletes, folks. And that will always make for fun.
Your move, NCAA. With this kind of virtual paper trail, you should be on this like a lap dancer on … ah, you get the picture.

Mississippi State Recruits Get Braggy on Facebook About Strip Club Visit in Starkville [The Big Lead]
Starkville does have something to do [Every Day Should Be Saturday]

  1. Paul - Jan 19, 2010 at 6:13 PM

Um … why exactly should the NCAA be on this? Because it’s their job to police every aspect of these kids’ lives? Who gives a damn if they went to a strip club? They had a blast and good for them.

  2. Tim - Jan 19, 2010 at 7:07 PM

to Paul: well, let’s count the ways this is wrong…
unless these young men are over the age of 21, their presence in this establishment was probably illegal…minors in a bar? and you’re not concerned? come on, pal, get with the program…
and yes, the NCAA does police most of the lives of college athletes. its how they try to prevent corruption and pay offs and bribes and all sorts of other bad things. come on pal, get with it…
because all the rest of the kids visiting Mississippi State to see if that’s where they wanted to go to school were in all likelihood NOT taken to a strip club. I don’t care how big a football stud the kid is…if all the Science and Math and Art students didn’t have the univeristy pay for them to visit the strip club of their choice, why would you do it for apparently really stupid high school jocks?

  3. I am Providence - Jan 19, 2010 at 7:15 PM

Tim, you’re right, this is wrong on so many levels. Just as wrong as the reasons you mentioned is the fact that MSU is recruiting Jameon Johnson: “AINT BEEN TOO LONG MADE IT HME … MAN WE HAD SUM FUN ET STATE BUT MY FAVORITE PART WAS WEN WE WENT TO (THE PONY) OH YEAH!!! … BIG UPS TO MI BIG DAWG PLAYERS BUT APPRECIATE DA HOST C. MITCHELL N L. PERKINS .. J. LEWIS#?” What kind of academic standards does a school have if they’re recruiting someone who writes like this? He doesn’t

He doesn’t even know how to spell “my.” It’s a 2-letter word, and he still gets it wrong.

  5. Rhonda121 - Jan 19, 2010 at 7:37 PM

Nice to know that MSU hasn’t read through the 418 page NEW RECRUITMENT Guidelines that were released in AUGUST 09. What idiots! It even spells out how much per diem you can spend per day per visit per athelete. Bet that was way over the cover charge for The Pony and the tips!
Wonder what Gino does to recruit the Women for UCONN? Now that would be more interesting to read. This crap has gone on for years. BORING.

  6. shark - Jan 19, 2010 at 7:44 PM

To Tim take the F**king broom out your A** unless you like it there…I’m sure it wasn’t a sactioned trip…and i am providence who the F**k care how someone types on FB

  7. Ryan - Jan 19, 2010 at 7:54 PM

Well Tim. You only have to be 18 to go into strip clubs. Because they generaly don’t serve alchohol or they wouldn’t have let them in. Also a lot of College players are And Paul is right who cares good for them.

  8. bowmanspartan - Jan 19, 2010 at 7:57 PM

If MSU was involved in the trip to The Pony, then its an NCAA issue; otherwise, it’s a non-story so far as NCAA is concerned. Now if they did go, it was a really poor choice for them to talk about it on Facebook as word will get around. They might have done more damage to their images (and their potential as MSU prospects) than they realize just yet.

Can somebody tell me WTF this poor kid is trying to say.. Tell me he is graduating from HS.. WOW.. Let’s hope he can get an education from MSU…

  10. Gatorade - Jan 19, 2010 at 8:12 PM

Well, even if it wasn’t sanctioned by MSU, it can be an NCAA issue. The school’s recruiting guidelines state that alcohol, drugs and sex will not be used to recruit an athlete and that all functions on a recruiting weekend go through the President’s office. Therefore, the university has controls established that oversee what takes place on these visits. If this incident took place, and the jury is still out but all the evidence is pointing to the fact that it did, it could possibly be a lack of institutional control. That is clearly within the realm of NCAA investigation.
But who really cares, it’s Mississippi State, the doormat of the SEC!

  11. RC is a idiot!!! - Jan 19, 2010 at 8:55 PM

First of all Rick Chandler should do a little research before he ever attempts to write a article on something else!! He left out a few facts in his attempt at writing. “The Pony” is not a notorious Starkville strip club. It is not located in Starkville, where MSU is located or even Oktibbeha County. It is about 10 to 15 mins from Starkville and is located in Clay County and near the city of West Point. The only pics of the guys in jerseys were when they were on campus in the athletic complex. From this idiots writing, he would have you believe that they went to the club in the MSU jerseys! With about two clicks of a mouse and a little reading, someone with a brain in their head could figure out where “The Pony” is located! He does work for NBC and they do have the problem with reporting things accurately so what do you expect for a idiot like Rick??

  12. Msneal - Jan 19, 2010 at 9:40 PM

Rick Chandler should be fired for posting an article that has not confirmed to be true. You are broadcasting rumors and you my friend give sports journalism a bad name. Did you perhaps contact MSU for a statement or possibly talk to others people to confirm that this actually did or did not happen. Further more I am disappointed in the CBS sports some kind of integrity your network has. Maybe the network will get sued for slander since you just stated 2nd hand info.

  13. bully95 - Jan 19, 2010 at 10:18 PM

Rick, this is a pathetic bit of reporting. I’m an MSU grad and if the University had any part in this, then there will be and should be consequences. However, you need to do your homework. Your mistakes have already been pointed out, but to outright try and mislead the readers with the jersey pics is just pitiful.
Obviously you have a background in the SEC and have nothing for Mississippi State. If you’re going to be a reporter, you should actually “report.” This is unacceptable.

  14. Bamalamadingdong - Jan 19, 2010 at 11:48 PM

Isn’t Tiger Woods in Mississippi right now? There has to be a connection!
In all seriousness, the news story shouldn’t be the trip to the strip club. Instead, it should be focused on how these barely literate young men could actually gain admission to a supposed institution of higher learning. What kind of high schools do they have in Mississippi? Good grief?

  15. psycho - Jan 19, 2010 at 11:54 PM

Is this a real article? I feel like I just read some b****** high school gossip column. Gimme a f’n break bro. This stuff has been going on for years at every other school in the sec. And with every decent athletic program in the country. Maybe you heard about miami or colorado? What went on at those places makes this ‘hearsay’ look like freakin’ Bible study. Go work for TMZ. Hell, if they’d take you.

  16. Kea - Jan 20, 2010 at 12:33 AM

This takes it place right up there with Andy Kennedy the Ole Miss B Ball Coach who is arrested for being Drunk and making racest comments, but is still coaching in Dixie Land. An 18 year old can’t make a stupid mistake, but doesn’t matter to NBCSports if rascism continues unchecked at Ole Miss…..

  17. mandy - Jan 20, 2010 at 8:02 AM

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at __Agemingle.com__ a nice and free place for Younger Women and Older Men, or Mature Women and Younger Men, to interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out

  18. Badb0wtie - Jan 20, 2010 at 9:26 AM

This is such a joke article. It makes the reader assume the recruits wore MSU jerseys to a “notorious” strip club. Give me a break you hack…..First of all, that club is anything but “notorious”. It stands out like the tallest midget compared to those in N.O. or Memphis. Second, they were not wearing jerserys at the club. This article and NBC as a whole is a joke. Way to FAIL…..

  19. FUBK2004 - Jan 20, 2010 at 10:19 AM

Mississippi State fans are delusional. You don’t have to have all the facts in a story to report a story.
Have you ever watched the news?
FACT: Recruits were bragging on the internet about visiting a
    strip club.
FACT: The HIGH SCHOOL KIDS were on an official visit to MSU
FACT: According to MSU guidelines, it is strictly prohibited to
use Adult entertainment as a recruiting tool.
FACT: The had on MSU jerseys. It doesn’t say the wore them to
to the club. It states a picture shows them in jerseys.
Thats enough facts to write an article.
And just to add….we all knew the kids were going to say it was a joke. That’s the easiest way to explain it off. But come on, MSU fans are the only ones that will believe it, because they WANT to believe it. Most likely, these kids visited a gentlemans club, and got busted for it. It sure as hell casts a negative light on MSU and their recruiting tactics. Im sure more than a few parents are thinking long and hard about sending their kids on official visits now.

  20. Rebel - Jan 20, 2010 at 11:56 AM

P.S. Andy Kennedy and his assistant coaches were not the one using racial slurs. It was the POS cabbie who called one of our coaches the N word. At that point AK went ballistic and wanted to kick his @ss. I do think he had been in the sauce though.

  21. American GI - Jan 20, 2010 at 2:16 PM

Hence forth this and all future such activities bt the MSU recruiting machine should be referred to as “The Dawg and Pony Show”

  22. I am Providence - Jan 20, 2010 at 7:01 PM

He doesn’t even know how to spell the word “my.” MSU may be a lousy school, but I would think that you should still be able to spell 2-letter words to get into the school.

  23. Phillip - Jan 22, 2010 at 2:16 PM

That would be an oxymoron. Getting an education and MSU!

  24. bianca causey - Feb 16, 2010 at 7:34 PM

Anyways… sum pple jus dnt want s blaaack african american cme up an do sumthn wit our lives,,, pple luk fa us make downfalls, but who dnt, we jus have to make sure we dont stay down, and finally sum gud happn tu us wen Barack Obama became president, IM SO PROUD OF YUH JAMEON LEWIS, and like sum1 else said “who gives ah damn how sum one spell on FB”!!! and make sure all yuh football playas dat went to the PONY, dont let dis shit keep yuh dwn..
