He's No Jerry Lewis, But You Have To Give John Calipari Credit For The Effort

Jan 17, 2010, 10:30 AM EDT

Likely to be as demonstrative as he is courtside while performing his duties as head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team, John Calipari will be hosting a telethon Sunday afternoon to raise money to aid the victims of the tragic earthquake in Haiti.
Beginning at noon eastern today, Calipari will host “Hoops for Haiti.” The telethon will be aired throughout Kentucky on Lexington’s WKYT television station and can also be seen online at
Calipari’s official website, as well as at

Calipari, along with businesspeople from the Lexington area, have agreed to match the donations received. He has also recruited several of his colleagues from the college basketball coaching ranks to make an appearance at the telethon, including Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim and Michigan State head Tom Izzo. Kentucky basketball players will work the phones. Donations can also be made at any time at the American Red Cross International Response Fund’s website.
An online auction on eBay has also been arranged. Among the items up for bid are a dinner for six at Calipari’s house, prepared by Ashley Judd’s chef. Unfortunately, no date with Ashley Judd is listed. Sigh.
Despite the lack of Ashley Judd in all her Wildcat goodness, Calipari is still hoping to raise a lot of money with “Hoops for Haiti.”

He said he had no idea how much money he could raise, but he said he hoped it was in the high six-figure range.

“The response that we’ve gotten so far has been unbelievable,” he said.
