Russell Simmons: Tiger Woods donating $3 million to Haiti relief

Jan 14, 2010, 7:30 PM EDT

Is Tiger Woods at this hour piloting a cargo plane full of relief supplies to earthquake-ravaged Haiti? “We don’t have time to land!” shouts Woods, over the roar of the engines. “Help me strap on this parachute! Just throw the penicillin and canned food after me!” So either Woods is coming out of hiding with a grand, sweeping philanthropic gesture, or an experienced promoter is just using his name to drum up charity support. Either way, it’s pretty interesting. Rap mogul Russell Simmons is saying — to anyone who will listen — that Woods is considering a $3 million gift to Haiti earthquake relief, which includes a mobile hospital setup. Awesome, and a bit surprising, if true. But is it true?
Just look at Simmons’ Twitter account, which is crackling with activity and throwing around Woods’ name with abandon.

I heard tiger woods donating to send a cargo plane with a mobile hospital out there. Keep ur prayers high! about 21 hours ago from UberTwitter

Tiger woods is doing something AMAZING!!!! about 21 hours ago from UberTwitter

From the New York Daily News:

“Tiger Woods is working on sending a mobile hospital with 50 EMTs to go set up a triage,” Simmons said Wednesday night.

Simmons and representatives from Wyclef Jean’s Haitian relief organization Yele have asked Woods to support the effort. Simmons spokesman has been in touch with Woods managment team and they are “excited” about the idea.

“I am waiting to have the conversation [with Tiger] tomorrow morning,” Simmons’ spokesman Marcus Harris said. “I am hopeful that it is a yes.”

“I am just asking for his heart and his hand,” he said. “Just to meet the needs of the people.”

Simmons said he is also trying to put together several big names in the hip hop community to produce a song for the country; a We Are The World for Haiti, so to speak.
At least one blog, SportsbyBrooks, is skeptical of the whole thing.

So we’ve gone from “Tiger is” to “Tiger is considering” helping out in the Haitian relief effort. Sounds a little like Simmons might’ve jumped the gun. Especially considering that Woods reps have been silent. If he was going to do such a thing, don’t you think they’d be trumpeting his good deed?

One thing is clear: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have already donated $1 million to the relief effort. Your move, Tiger.
Here’s one way you can help.

lol…i bet Tiger must have screwed some hation chick and is sending this aid over there to shut her up about the size of his tiny member.

Who the heck is Rick Chandler and what has he done to contribute to relief efforts, aside from making snarky remarks about those who are actually helping, like the closet sissy he is?

My comment might upset some people, but here goes anyway. It seems like the only time African American celebrities, Moguls or Power Makers come out to support a cause is when disaster hits other blacks.
I was recently looking at some pictures of celebrities going overseas to support our troops and I didn’t notice one Black Celebrity volunteering or in the picture entertaining our Troops. Unfortunately all I saw was White celebrities, athletes an musicians. This was sad.
With this in incident in Haiti, the Back Power Makers in the u.s. are coming out in numbers to donate money, time and effort. It is great to see but I feel like that it is unfair in some shape or manner.
Is our country still so divided? We are a country of greatness and great people. Whenever a disaster happens in our world, we are always the first to come out and help.
I hope that whenever any disaster comes along, that we will stand united with one common cause, to do good.
    ==================================
Tiger has done many events and activities aboard aircraft carriers and other venues with the American military. So, although the events you say may well have been only Whites, your observation is not absolute in it’s conclusion.

Is this alleged 3 million dollar donation to relief effort in Haiti a sign he may emerge from hiding to publically endure the shame and guilt of infidelity? Man up Eldrick and face the music.

I think if Tiger wants to donate 3M to relief efforts that is great. If he is doing to help repair his tarnished reputation, he is doing it for the wrong reason. So which is it? If you look at his foundations funding you will quickly realize that is not Tiger’s money that keeps the foundation going. He provided seed money to get it started, but it is through corporate sponsorship and volunteer donations that keeps the foundation afloat. I don’t recall any donations for Katrina nor do I recall any funding for the Greensburg tornado relief coming from Tiger Woods. Now, a completely and entirely different country needs aid and now he steps to the plate?

Well said Doc! God is loving, kind and compassionate. God doesn’t care about one’s color, skin, and social class. Please pray for all people who are affected by this catastrophe. I was born in Haiti and I came to the United States in my late teen. I just want to thank all those who give and pray for all the people of Haiti. In case you don’t have any monetary donation to contribute you can still pray for the people there because they have a long way to go before they can recover from this tragedy.
    Thanks all.

I agree, I would not be hanging out having a beer with Tiger. Sounds crazy but I have been with people that have money/fame…..very shallow and rude. Sometimes people ignore that because its so cool to be with a star. Its not cool when you see what happens to the fans or people they come in contact with.

I wouldn’t care or question motives or anything else even if Hitler’s ghost sends 3 mil to Haiti. Those folks are in dire need, and 3 mil helps, regardless……..

  13. Danielt - Jan 16, 2010 at 3:17 AM

I can not believe how ignorant a lot of people are. If he is giving Hait 3 million dollars that is great. I do not care what his reasons may be. 3 million dollars will prpbably save the lives of a lot of children.
I think a lot of the right wingers are being nasty about Hait because this is poor black peopel we are helping. I think down deep most of them hate poor black people. I know Rush Limbaugh does.

Let’s not have God blessing Tiger or Russ Simmons yet the money hasn’s got to Haiti as yet. Let’s bless the CNN DR. Sanjy Gupta who spent all night alone in a room with 30 patients and took care of them all, until this morn. when the Drs from Belgium returned.
