President Obama has figured out this whole Tiger Woods thing

Jan 14, 2010, 10:00 AM EDT

Well, here’s another high level security goof. Someone let President Obama talk to People Magazine about Tiger Woods; in my opinion a worse mistake than letting a herd of Tareq and Michaele Salahis into a White House state dinner. The magazine comes out on Friday, and we have a couple of excerpted quotes following the jump. Obama talks about the chances of Woods rehabilitating himself, and all the while I’m reading it I’m picturing a Secret Service agent throwing himself between the President and the People reporter to save his boss from grief. “Questions fired! Renegade down! Renegade down!” Sadly, that did not happen. Just take a look at the ABC News comments section to see what I mean.

Obama on Woods, via ABC News:

“I don’t want to comment on his personal relationship with his wife and family, but I’m a strong believer that anybody can look within themselves, find their flaws and fix them,” Obama told the newest issue of People. Obama added he is sure Woods feels “terrible” of what happened and is confident that he would “put his life back together again.”

The President said that he’s sure Tiger feels “terrible” about what happened, “and I suspect that he will try to put his life back together again.”

Of course everyone has taken those comments in the spirit that they were given, and thanked the President for reaching out in a spirit of good will. Just kidding! ABC News commenters bubbled over with bitterness.

* So Obama is now the Shrink-in-Chief? — JJGH

* Why is Obama the expert on everything? He doesnt need to weigh in on tabloid issues. — Zeke

* What does Obama have to do with Tiger Woods, and why would we value Obama’s opinion anyway? — Ed Taylor

* Get real. You’re not a counselor. Focus on the failing economy, Haiti, Iraq, and a thousand other issues. What motivated this question to the CIC? Perhaps a magazine cover with the two guys and Woods giving the CIC advice. Interesting. SAD — Chris Howard

* So, Pres. Obama is the Progressives’ Dr. Phil? — gimphilly

* Wow glad to know our president has time to talk about athletes as opposed to actually working just more proof of how much democrats suck — Crey

The comments about the President needing to “focus on the failing economy”, Haiti, etc. are absolutely ridiculous.
He was asked a question and he gave a three sentence answer. That doesn’t mean he’s “focusing” on Tiger Woods. Gimme a break.
When you have a LEGITIMATE complaint about the President, please feel free to voice it. Bashing him over what basically amounts to nothing just made them seem partisan and small.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and presume that Crey has more overarching issues than debatable Obama quotes.

The president of the United States should not have a comment on tabloid fodder, it is beneath the position!
