Golf Digest suspends Tiger's tips column

Dec 23, 2009, 2:30 PM EDT

Golf Digest does not want Tiger’s Tips column for the next few weeks. Damn this struggling economy! Still reeling a bit from last month’s irony-filled cover (pictured), GD is suspending Woods’ monthly column for the duration of his hiatus from the sport, Boston Golf Examiner is reporting.
My guess is that Golf Digest didn’t actually pull the plug on this, but rather it was Tiger who told the magazine he won’t be filing columns for the time being. After all, under the circumstances, the columns would be very difficult to write; each sentence loaded down with irony and Freudian innuendo.
Lesson 1: The 5 Basic Body Actions of Golf … “No way was it 5! I only saw her twice!”
My first lesson with a pupil: they show me, I show them. “Um, let’s move on …”
Connecting Foot Action to Leg/Knee Action. “Tough to do in the back seat of even the roomiest SUV …”

From Boston Golf Examiner:

Woods will not supply the magazine with golf tips during his hiatus from professional golf, a Golf Digest spokesperson tells Boston Golf Examiner.

No more Tiger tips. “Golf Digest has had a long-standing relationship with Tiger Woods to provide instruction articles for the magazine, and we do not have any plans to change that,” says a Golf Digest statement. “We respect Tiger’s decision to take a break from professional golf and focus on his family; Tiger’s bylined instruction articles will not be published in Golf Digest during his time away from the game.”

Meanwhile, Tiger’s approval numbers are plummeting as if they were tied to a falling safe. And he seems to be taking the PGA Tour down with him.

Before the never-ending Woods saga began late last month, the buzz surrounding the PGA Tour was 84 percent positive. That was higher than the NBA (81 percent positive), MLB (75 percent), and NHL (72 percent), according to digital marketing agency Zeta Interactive.

Buzz kill. As of December 22, however, the online popularity of the PGA Tour had dropped to 64 percent, which was lower than any other major sports league in the United States.

We’re approaching Lingerie Football League depth, captain! If we get down to pro bowling and (gulp!) WNBA, the hull won’t be able to stand the pressure!

Just cuz he’s an asshole doesn’t mean he’s not still good at golf. I still need to get out of this fairway bunker, dammit!

  2. Bob - Dec 23, 2009 at 4:48 PM

“As of December 22, however, the online popularity of the PGA Tour had dropped to 64 percent” – Is this because of Tiger or could it be that there is nothing happening PGA Golfwise until the tour starts back up in January????? I would bet if the online popularity of the PGA Tour were tracked every year you would see a seasonal decline every winter.

  3. Karen - Dec 23, 2009 at 4:54 PM

Now if Nike could drop him.

  4. Dave - Dec 23, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Tiger is fine. All he needs to do is go out and win a few matches then those cowards will come groveling back

  5. I once believed - Dec 23, 2009 at 5:06 PM

I was one who NEVER would watch golf until Tiger came on the scene.
His PR team had me COMPLETELY FOOLED. I along with millions believed that Tiger was really a good guy who just happened to be a great golfer. Now I look at the PGA wondering why he got away with it for so long that his fellow PGA players had to know what was going on, so is everyone in golf pigs? Thats the way it looks.

  6. Tagteam - Dec 23, 2009 at 5:15 PM

    OK, kill the golden goose.

  7. J - Dec 23, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Come on. If anyone believed that Tiger was perfect, you are only fooling yourselves. He is as flawed as the rest of us only he is really good at golf and has the resources to insulate himself really well. That is until this situation. Everyone deserves a mulligan now and then.

So, what’s wrong with watching Lefty for a change?
I always thought Tiger was a jerk, talented though he may be.
You mean the crowds are not going to pile into Agusta this year? Geat real. Tell you what, I’ll buy anybody’s unwanted tickets right now.

If Tiger had only played golf, his private life should stay private. However, he used his persona to sell us unrelated products. He is the one who made himself public for money. He now has to take the fall-out from that move. Live by the endorsement, die by the endorsement.

  10. rebecca z - Dec 23, 2009 at 6:34 PM

would you please understand that in the big scene of yours or my life this has nothing to do with anything that means anything of importance.

  11. Kim - Dec 23, 2009 at 6:54 PM

Tiger should not take a break from golf. He is getting older, coming off an operation on his knee still, and a divorce could devastate him mentally if he doesn’t stay active. He needs to care for his mental health, and stay active to take care of his physical health. Also, he now needs to fool around more, since it is no longer “fooling around.” Elin is gone. She ain’t comin’ back. Jump right back on the horse, buddy. Don’t brood about the one that got away. This is age old wisdom that any dude whose wife divorced him knows. His other options are to either become a monk or get married again. Not good choices for any man who just got divorced.

OK, where are we? I’m back again, still singing the same tune:”Tigers’ gone, finished, Kaput!” Now he’s gone somewhere with his yacht. So much for the words he stated 2-3 weeks ago, that he’s sorry and all that rot! Here too his words are with forked tongue! At one point I was hoping he’d come around, at least for his 2 children, let alone his wife! So now she’s gonna take him to the cleaners! Good for her, as sad as it is. We on the outside have no clue whatsoever what this man is thinking! He’s like, gone bananas! Just isn’t normal, not even for a man who tires of his marriage. Doesn’t he even want to see his children? Is he too embarrased, confused, what? Tell us, Tiger, it’s about time to come public and show us your trying to salvage “whatever”.

  13. Cedric - Dec 23, 2009 at 8:13 PM

Why can’t we let Tiger move on with his life. He did not commit a crime. What about real issues that affect our lives, the thiefs in banking that stole our money because they were greedy or Medicare that is so poor run that fraud against it is the normal. These types of issues is were our focus should be, not on Tiger. I don’t agree with what Tiger did but…….as Tupac said “Only God can judge me f@#k else” Who an I to judge?

  14. Ken - Dec 23, 2009 at 9:54 PM

Tiger’s “P.R. Team” is a joke. (unless Tiger just isn’t listening to them as I think most expect is happening.) This situation won’t get better as long as he remains in hiding. It’s like golf’s version of where’s Waldo. I felt bad for Tiger for a while, even though what he did sucked. But I was concerned he might harm himself being brought down so low from so high so quickly. But now as he blows off the tour, doesn’t say anything to anyone, I’m thinking that maybe Tiger did what he did because “I’m Tiger Woods”, and I can do whatever I want. And he’s not going to kiss anyone’s behind even now. He apologized on line, he’s a billionaire, maybe he will just hang it up. Could his ego be that big? To have a dozen mistresses all over the country/world and not expect even one to spill the beans he must have. Tiger, Tiger, Tiger, you dissapoint us more with your silence than your actions. Grow up and face the music and help repair the damage you’ve caused.

Hey let’s not get all bent out of shape over this Tiger thing. It’s no big deal. Who cares what the public thinks. Granted he is a role model for kids and golfers in general, but big deal, he slept with a couple of women (and was married at the time). I am telling you all, just back off and let the family work it out. God knows what you figure pointing people have done in your dark closets. Bet you don’t want anyone to find out either. So look in the mirror before you judge people.

  16. don porter - Dec 24, 2009 at 8:22 AM

Now that the Tiger has exploded, the rest will be coming out about the other “Tigers” out there making golf a question mark about it becoming an Olympic sport?

  17. Life Anyone? - Dec 24, 2009 at 3:05 PM

Tiger is not a perfect person! There, i said it. Now let’s move on and leave the man alone. he didn’t commit any crime and no one was hurt (physically) other than his family. He brought golf to the world that Nickluas, Palmer, Kim, Phil, and Els couldn’t, and anyone who says otherwise is fooling himself/herself. Tiger will be back. For now, leave the man alone.

  18. tas - Dec 24, 2009 at 3:06 PM

u will see these all companies will run for him to endorse their products as soon he come back to golf course he did wrong but he is the best golfer in current golf history.we have to forgive him and let him join golf becuase in this economy golf industry is hurting not Tigerwood he can survive several year without any endorsement but industry can not.

  19. Annoyed Citizen - Dec 24, 2009 at 3:21 PM

The guy built an Ad empire as a decent, family-first guy. Asked point blank about it he said “YES; family is always first”. The guy is an outright liar! Why should his printed words be any different. Yeah, he can play golf. He’s just managed to burst his integrity bubble. Well, more like total explode the stupid image!
Looks like his income is now limited to the $$$ made on the course. It will be interesting to see if any of his sluts will bed him now that he’s not making the Bi$$$ions in Ad money.

With Tiger M.I.A. wouldn’t it be great if Sergio could maybe learn to putt a little better! Sure would like to see that guy win a few in 2010. He has his problems too with temper but, I Like the guy. Anyone who has dated Martina Hingis is cool in my book. Rock on Sergio!!!!

  21. dskier - Dec 24, 2009 at 6:07 PM

As a boy Tiger put Nicklaus’s records on his wall. He aspired to be a great golfer. Sure he would make money…however global recognition, vast sums of money from sponsors, and changing golf forever as some would suggest, could not have been foreseen. With the aforementioned came a beautiful wife and family. Morally he has screwed up, period. Morally many of us have failed…more than once. Most of us like Tiger because of his unparalleled golfing abilty. No one can hit a 3 wood, 5 wood, 8 iron etc. like him. No one. At the end of the day it isn’t about character, race or bimhos or even golf. It’s often more about the image WE create of an individual and OUR expectations that come with it. His image, created by sponsors and untold others is finally in his hands. Our expectations should be about his golf game.

  22. mark123 - Dec 25, 2009 at 12:50 AM

Its pretty unbelievable, the tiger enablers with all their excuses why we should just look past his character. “He is the greatest”, he’s a winner, his wife/girlfriends are the problem, etc. Pretty scary, I think the word is HYPOCRITE, telling us just to leave him alone, he didn’t do anything wrong other than cheat, lie and put on a phony image to everybody. With this logic, then there should be no problem with finding out your wife, husband, girlfriend, etc. have been making up elaborate stories, working late, screwing all your friends, etc…you should be able to just brush it off, good enough for tiger, then same game plan should work for you and your set of values. I could be wrong, but probably not.

i am an open marriage kink of guy, should have put it in the pn agreement.

  24. synergy1 - Dec 25, 2009 at 3:16 PM

I have been a huge Tiger fan from the beginning. Assuming that he and his wife did not have an open marriage then he cheated on her. That’s their business however the concern it raises for me is if Tiger cheats/lies/breaks the rules with his wife does that not raise the possibility that he would do the same thing to this game we all love? In over 70 years of living I have learned that a cheater seldom does it in just one area of his life. I hope I am wrong. I love watching and rooting for Tiger. He has been (past tense intended) great for the game. I believe that he must re-earn the trust of his fans. Convincing people that you are trustworthy is much harder than convincing them you are a liar. I truly wish him success.

This is stupid, life is life, get over it! Go do your 9 to 5 Tiger like everyone else…
