Golf Digest suspends Tiger's tips column

Dec 23, 2009, 2:30 PM EDT

Golf Digest does not want Tiger’s Tips column for the next few weeks. Damn this struggling economy! Still reeling a bit from last month’s irony-filled cover (pictured), GD is suspending Woods’ monthly column for the duration of his hiatus from the sport, Boston Golf Examiner is reporting.
My guess is that Golf Digest didn’t actually pull the plug on this, but rather it was Tiger who told the magazine he won’t be filing columns for the time being. After all, under the circumstances, the columns would be very difficult to write; each sentence loaded down with irony and Freudian innuendo.
Lesson 1: The 5 Basic Body Actions of Golf … “No way was it 5! I only saw her twice!”
My first lesson with a pupil: they show me, I show them. “Um, let’s move on …”
Connecting Foot Action to Leg/Knee Action. “Tough to do in the back seat of even the roomiest SUV …”

From Boston Golf Examiner:

Woods will not supply the magazine with golf tips during his hiatus from professional golf, a Golf Digest spokesperson tells Boston Golf Examiner.

No more Tiger tips. “Golf Digest has had a long-standing relationship with Tiger Woods to provide instruction articles for the magazine, and we do not have any plans to change that,” says a Golf Digest statement. “We respect Tiger’s decision to take a break from professional golf and focus on his family; Tiger’s bylined instruction articles will not be published in Golf Digest during his time away from the game.”

Meanwhile, Tiger’s approval numbers are plummeting as if they were tied to a falling safe. And he seems to be taking the PGA Tour down with him.

Before the never-ending Woods saga began late last month, the buzz surrounding the PGA Tour was 84 percent positive. That was higher than the NBA (81 percent positive), MLB (75 percent), and NHL (72 percent), according to digital marketing agency Zeta Interactive.

Buzz kill. As of December 22, however, the online popularity of the PGA Tour had dropped to 64 percent, which was lower than any other major sports league in the United States.

We’re approaching Lingerie Football League depth, captain! If we get down to pro bowling and (gulp!) WNBA, the hull won’t be able to stand the pressure!

Of the 26 comments that I am following, I wonder how many of you happen to live in “the glass house” that is often cited and are throwing stones at Woods. Heck, Presidents of this country have done stupid stuff, not saying its right Probably half of everybody out there has commited assorted actions that are not conducive to good marital relations-are you a stone thrower?

ohhhh, poor lil cheetah ! Well, at least his kids will be well provided for…with all kind of slurs and gossip as they grow up, and with that in mind, knowing the ridicule his kids are to undergo, I say to heck with the guy. I get tired of watching cheetah lean on that putter right behind someone attepting a putt anyway. oh, yes, let’s be sure and put a 5 par on the final two holes so he can get back in contention.

  4. Unagolfer - Dec 26, 2009 at 9:21 PM

we’re leaning on HIS putter now………watching his every move. Like he did with others. Yup, it’s a great way to get a guy nervous. And boy, is this guy nervous now. I’d say everyone lean on the putters and eyeball him the next time he golfs, if ever. Heh, heh.

I wish to GOD people would stop with this “he OWES US an apology” sh@t. How many of you every day, common asses out there are married to Tiger, anyway?! Since when and why do some of you feel that he owes YOU an apology personally! I think some of you sad SOBs just take a sadistic pleasure in watching others, especially someone of Tiger stature, screw up and stumble so that your own inadequate butt feels more secure about yourself and sense of low achievement and worthlessness. Tiger has only hurt himself and his immediate family really, as anyone else, YES including the tour itself, has only thrived living off his performances on the course and has been rewarded handsomely over the last 13 years as a result. He’s no worse a person than many others out there- from the PGA tour, pro sports in general, and ultimately society itself- who aren’t famous and people would care less if you croaked tomorrow, let alone cheated on your spouse. What, because he pitches us some products he is beholden to a public lynching! Get serious people. Some of you are even taking his self imposed sabbatical as a personal slap in the face! Where’s that coming from. The man has just had his personal business aired for all to judge, been assaulted by his wife, caused possibly irreparable damage to his marriage, and lost any hope of privacy and peace for the near future from the paparazzi. I don’t hear people condemning the domestic spousal abuse he apparently suffered, in fact a lot of people are CHEERING it. You let him have done the same to her EVEN IF the circumstances had been reversed and that REALLY would have caused an uproar! A black man hitting a white woman, in America, please! I suspect that many of you feeling that he owes YOU an apology is racially related anyway, because after all, Tiger needs to know his place right? Focus on your own shortcomings and your own families and stop worrying about Tiger’s because it’s really none of your business anyways. GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!

Let’s see, last I chcecked he still had Nike, Tag Hauer, Gillete, and a few others still on board and they pay all but about $30 to $40 million of the $110 million he was making before. So, isn’t that still anywhere from $70 to $80 million a year still. He’s REALLY suffering now and close to broke isn’t he! LOL! He’ll STILL be the top earning entertainer/sports figure period. Plus, he’s already EARNED a billion if he never makes another dollar, what have YOU earned financially?! I suspect that if he wanted any of the 15 minutes-of-fame seeking sluts he’d have them, because believe you me, they’d love to be the first lady of a billionaire. How many of your mistresses want to move in with you?!

  7. ChillyPhil - Dec 26, 2009 at 9:57 PM

Exactly what point are you trying so desperately to make anyway? What is this “we” crap you’re expousing as if you are included in his persoanl affairs and owed anything- an apology maybe- personally! No one is saying that what he did was right, condonable, or anything along those lines. But it is the business of Tiger and his family to sort out and has nothing to do with ANYONE else. So again, who is “we” anyway?!!

  8. Ed - Dec 27, 2009 at 4:38 PM

I wonder how many of these people envy Tiger. I for one will not mind being in his shoes.

  9. steve kazmer - Dec 27, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Can Tiger just go away quietly? How many kids are going to want to be Tiger Woods now? How many parents are going to want their kids to have Tiger Woods as their hero?
He needs to just bow out quietly.
Should he come back and play well it would be an indicator of just how screwed up he really is. Who could ignore the things he’s done and play solid golf after screwing up his wife and childrens lifes like he has?
I hope they boo him off the course. He’s going to hear it from the good people in the crowd. The only ones who will be backing him are the bear drinking married, sleeping around themselves, weekend golfers and the bear drinking single guys who will probably never get married because they are loosers too.

  10. Kazmer - Dec 27, 2009 at 6:29 PM

    I applaud Golf Digests decision.
If Woods cheated with his wife he likely cheated with some type of Roid-cocktail and a masking substance.
When I was playing in my prime, I used inferior equipment and I hit it 300+ most all the time but to hit his Irons that far—gotta be more cheating we don’t know about yet, or he made a pact with the devil and like Danial Webster—it’s just his time to pay the piper.

Did anyone really buy the razors, or deal with Accenture or get Nike golf equipment because he is a family man….get real!!

  12. WarmFuzzies - Dec 28, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Tiger is a competitor and will ulitmately return to the game bigger and better than ever and crush jack’s major wins records just to spite all the Tigers “Haters”. Tiger’s credo is “Never say die”.

  13. D-Bag - Dec 28, 2009 at 11:18 PM

I never cared for Tigers tips. I even bought his book “How I Play Golf” and I found it very self serving.
I am curious how the fans will respond when he does start golfing again. Last time I checked they still serve beer at golf tournaments. That whole stopping your swing at the click of a camera will be quite prominent. Although, I always felt that when he did that it was a simple parlor trick and attempt to show how good he was. I think he will be heckled and it should be interesting to see how he responds to it.

  14. as*h*le - Dec 29, 2009 at 2:43 PM

Why should they drop him…He’s made so much money for them…have you???

  15. ChillyPhil - Jan 2, 2010 at 8:29 PM

Another hypocritical, idiot has something to say huh?! And let me guess, YOU are perfect huh? Well, in that case, here’s an idea! Why don’t YOU start advertising others’ products and make a killing in the process. After all, wouldn’t everyone want to hear from the SOLE perfect individual on the planet?! Why SHOULD he bow out quietly? He’s still capable of playing great golf and he hasn’t violated any of the TOUR’s mandates. What he did, as tasteless as it may be, doesn’t have a damn thing to do with playing professional golf. He has more than paid ANY debt to the tour in the amount of money that has poured into golf after his ascent b/c his appeal has broadened golf’s fan base and hence resulted in increased ad revenue. How do you figure that if he’s able to return and dominate again that it shows any kind of character flaw? People have played games after REAL tragedies like the death of loved ones or 9/11 even! The ability to do so separates the elite from the merely good ones. YOU just don’t want to see him do good is all! Again, your comments on him using steriods shows that you are clearly in awe of him and jealous to boot. You hope they boo him? Who but insignificant, jealous, HATERS who don’t want anyone else to be successful because they themselves aren’t would want to see someone else fail at something. Tiger has God given ability that he’s worked damn hard to hone into a supreme talent. He has FORCED the once fat, lazy golfers to actually take their craft seriously and get into shape and practice…..practice? People actually see golf as a sport now for the first time and it is about to become an Olympic sport. He routinely jogs, lifts weights, and practices more than any other golfer does and has been doing so since he was still a child prodigy. THAT’S why he’s better than anyone else is and ever was!
