Update: Golfers deny making critical comments about Woods

Dec 10, 2009, 4:30 PM EDT

Two PGA Tour golfers who were quoted by a Life & Style Magazine reporter as saying critical things about Tiger Woods are saying that they never talked with the magazine. Wednesday’s online edition of Life & Style Weekly included an article with quotes from Ben Crane and Charles Warren about Woods and wife Elin Nordegren. According to the magazine, Crane is supposed to have said, “He’s (Tiger’s) a phony and a fake and he can’t retain that squeaky-clean endorsement deal any longer.” Warren is supposed to have referred to Woods as a “bastard,” and said that his wife should leave him.
But earlier today Crane told The Associated Press that he was never at the location where the interview took place, and he has not spoken about Woods’ situation.

Similarly, Warren said he never talked to anyone from Life & Style.
From Wednesday’s Life & Style online article:

“This is no surprise to anyone who knows Tiger,” Crane tells Life & Style. “He’s a phony and a fake and he can’t retain that squeaky-clean endorsement deal any longer.”

Crane also believes Elin may have known about Tiger’s other women. “She’s no fool,” Crane says, adding that perhaps Elin “turned a blind eye because of the money and the kids and the lifestyle he provides.”

“She (Elin) was very young when Jesper introduced them,” Warren tells Life & Style. “She had stars in her eyes and maybe dollar signs too. But no, she should not stay with him. What kind of message would that send to her sister and mother and all the women out there? That your husband can be a bastard but as long as he makes the deal worthwhile, you’ll stay?”

Life & Style editors said that a freelance reporter wrote the article, and they are investigating.

    ALL OF THESE GUYS THAT ARE SAYING THJNGS ARE JUST JEALOUS OF TIGER, YOU CAN TAKE ALL OF THEM AND PUT THEIR CAREER TOTAL NUMBER OF WINS TOGETHER AN NOT COME CLOSE TO TIGERS WINS. BEN CRANE,CHARLES WARREN WHAT HAVE THEY DONE FOR GOLF (NOTHING). TIGER IS NOT THE ONLY PRO GOLFER TO CHEAT ON HIS WIFE, IF YOU LOOK DEEP SOME OTHERS HAVE DONE THE SAME. JUST BECAUSE HE IS THE BEST PLAYER ON TOUR OTHERS WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM KICK OFF THE TOUR. RACE ALSO PLAYS A PART IN THIS ALSO, IF HE WAS MARRIED TO A BLACK WOMAN NOTHING WOULD HAVE BEEN SAID PEROID. YOU SO CALLED WHITE PEOPLE THINK YOU WILL ALL WAY CALL THE SHOTS BUT WITHOUT TIGER RATING FOR GOLF GOES DOWN THE DRAIN. THE GREAT WHITE HOPE HAS NOT ARISED YET IN GOLF AFTER JACK AND ARNOLD. DIG DEEP AN SEE WHO ELSE ON THE TOUR HAS HAD OTHER WOMEN AND WAS MARRIED.

    You know, I would hope that Tiger would be humbled by this experience,like shaking a childs hand now and then and giving autographs as the older pros use to do instead of staring straight ahead as he leaves the golf course.

    Tiger is an awesome golfer and yes, people watch golf nowadays because or in spite of him. As a man, he obviously is human and is flawed. So what. And just because other golfers cheat on their wives doesn’t make it right. And Winston, you’re an idiot to even bring race into this. You are just a plain idiot. It has NOTHING to do with race. NOTHING. Idiot.

    Winston, you’re a dumb S**t!

    I do hope that Tiger is sitting at home reading all the negative things that the Golfers and Media personnel are saying about him. Tiger’s private life is something for him and Elin to deal with. It’s bad enough as it is for both Tiger and Elin, let them deal with this situation privately. Tiger already admitted his transgressions and does not need to explain any details to what has transpired. Tiger, please write down the names of those media personnel who wrote or say negative things about you,(remember their names, they will want to interview you at some point in the future and you know what to do. They need you more than you need them). When you come back to golfing, remember those golfers who had negative things to say about you as well. Most importantly, I want you to show the golfing world with your play, what they have done. You don’t owe no one an explanation, come back my brother and play golf like you have never play before, let your clubs do your talking. I certainly hope you and Elin can work things out, it will take patience on your part and a lot of forgiveness on Elin’s part, but time usually take care of that. I’m hoping only the best for you and Elin.

    @Winston
    I’m black and you’re stupid. When the racist goofies and the over-liberated liberals talk about “Black” people in a negative connotation, it’s because of the one’s like you. If you are black, which I doubt, your hood card has just been revoked. Stay in the dark ages with the aforementioned because without one another, race & gender cards could never be played.
    @Tiger/Eldrick: keep your head up bro. You screwed up and now it’s time to face the music. You’ll get through it.

    I agree with Winston. Hopefully Tiger has learned from his mistakes. Maybe he can change, maybe not. It depends on what he wants from life. Maybe he just wasn’t ready for marriage. I pray that his family can work it out, it is what is best. I am a woman and love Tiger, just like many women. I think the women are also to blame. They all know he is married and they were just after the money. What goes around comes around. I just want to see Tiger play golf and wish him happiness. My husband says he raally doesn’t care what Tiger does in his personal life. He just wants to watch him play golf.
