So a guy in Frederick Maryland is zipping around town on a Segway scooter taking pictures of high school cheerleaders, and then posting the pics on his web site. Innocent fun, or most inappropriate use of a Segway since this? You be the judge. Actually, Frederick parents are also judging, and it seems to be that Frederick.com owner Craig Shipp has been ruled very creepy. Some are angry and have demanded that their daughters’ photos be removed from the site.
I looked at some of the photos — which Shipp has plastered all over three different sites he runs, including a Flickr site — and none or them are salacious … just very odd. From the Frederick News Post:
Contacted by phone, Shipp said nothing he was doing is inappropriate or unethical and that the girls all wanted their photographs taken.
Shipp often attends public events and school activities on a Segway with a sign that reads “Frederick.com,” and “PRESS” in large block lettering, raising fears among school officials and parents that images taken under the banner of web journalism are being used for different purposes on the Internet.
Just the kind of thing you eventually want in your obituary: “Member of the Elks Club, was a deacon at his church. Often attended public events on a Segway with a sign that reads PRESS.”
Shipp also told NBC News-4:
“Until this article was published,” Shipp continued, “and in fact right through this conversation with you, I have never had a complaint from a parent, and I have 30,000 photos on my Flickr photostream.”
Holy crap. Your life has not been wasted, I see.
UPDATE: A reader writes: Rick — Someone who rides a Segway, hangs around young girls (like during spring break, for example?) and has a high opinion of himself? Making a (George) GOB Bluth reference would’ve been a layup, huh? Darn. — Zach
