Tiger Woods shocked to learn he is not worshiped as a deity by all
Nov 23, 2009, 2:08 PM EDT
First Philadelphia Eagles fans booed Santa Claus, forever placing that group in the Sports Lout Hall of Fame. And now the University of California has stepped up to join them in spectator ignominy. On Saturday at the Big Game at Stanford Stadium, Cal fans booed Tiger Woods. Yes, and it wasn’t just a smattering of boos — they really let him have it.
So much so that Woods was taken aback, and reportedly didn’t even finish his halftime remarks. There’s our hero to the right, accompanied by lovely wife Elin Nordegren and daughter Sam during pre-Big Game festivities. Woods was named honorary captain for the game by the Cardinal, and was being inducted into the Stanford Sports Hall of Fame.
All look happy there; but soon their world will be shattered by rude and vociferous blue-and-gold faithful.
Video here.
The local Channel 7 sports guys were having a bit of fun with that: “I’m being booed? In my own house?” But indeed it may have been the only time in his life that Tiger has been booed. And you know, before comparing him to great athletes in other sports, we should remember that. How good would Tiger be if half the people who came to watch him play were screaming obscenities? Golfers never have to deal with that, unless they’re John Daly.
Every game is a home game in golf. Crowds clap politely no matter what you do. You say that there’s self-imposed pressure in golf, but what if you’re lining up for a putt and you see these guys in the gallery?
Also, try pulling this at Heinz Field and see what happens.

Tiger Stunned As He’s Loudly Booed at Stanford [SportsbyBrooks]

Somehow – I can’t tell how – I wound up at this story. Then I looked to the right and found some other equally lurid tales written by little rickie.
little rickie is (as always) desperate to find a shocking story to write – judging from the other shocking titles on the right for little rickie there appears to be no other kind – so he finds some louts in California who are more than willing to aid the cause
sigh
Rick – You actually make a living writing this drivel?

Anybody, including Tiger, that wears a red shirt at the Cal Stanford game will get booed by the Cal fans. It’s what we do.

Wow, what a shockingly bad article. Poorly written, nonsensical, and utterly without a point. Well that is 30 seconds out of my life I will never get back, but at least I could make it slightly worth while by writing this.

I guess Cal football fans are the retards at the Univ. of California. The ones with SATs of 400 (that’s what you get if you know your name)

That is embarassing for the U.S. How can you boo someone who has done so much for sports, golf, and children? With his family there as well – I am proud to be American, but sometimes I am not proud of Americans. Everyone who took part in the booing should search their souls and ask God for forgiveness.
And in answer to The local Channel 7 sports guys: If crowds were like that in golf, Tiger would get used to it, it would be the same for all golfers, and Tiger would still win because he is just flat out that talented period, end of story.

Just sounds like a rude bunch of people to me. That’s utterly ridiculous behavior. The writer of this article sounds like he was happy that Tiger was booed.
Get a grip guy, that behavior was just plain tacky. And this article…if you can call it that…isn’t even worth of a link from MSNBC.
Sometimes I really wonder about the editorial decisions @ MSNBC.com. Come on…I know you can do better than this.

What a freakin’ stupid statement. An athlete is measured by how dominant he or she is to their peers – it’s the only true measurement that we have. The crowd’s behavior has nothing to do with it. And Tiger is ONE of the most dominant athletes in their sport that we’ve ever seen.

Poor Rick, judging by most of these comments, you’ve got an irony challenged readership. It must have been sad day for them when they were cut from the Deadspin JV Commentariat.

Cal and Stanford are two of the greatest universities in the world. The rivalry goes back over 100 years. If Tiger didn’t appreciate the intensity of the rivalry then he didn’t learn much in his TWO years at Stanford (he dropped out). People that planned this event are the ones to blame, they should have known what would happen. I am sure Tiger will live.

As TERRIBLEARTICLE posted, Tiger is one of the most dominant athletes in any sport. As for his mental toughness, apparently that lame poster never read the oft repeated stories about when Tiger was a kid and his father would drop a bag just as Tiger was starting his downswing. His dad would make him take the result of that shot, and he quickly learned to handle it. Somehow I think he could handle swearing morons. Actually Tiger is one golfer who could probably even handle a “defense” like in that old beer ad.

So who gives a s**t if Tiger was booed? Who is he, the GD Savior or something? He’s a Stanford grad — of course Cal would boo him. If a UNC grad spoke at a Duke game he’d get booed, too. Ditto a Michigan grad at Ohio State and on and on and on. Just because 99.9% of the sports media has its head up Tiger’s a** doesn’t mean we all should do the same.

I wholeheartedly agree. Tiger’s attitude lately on the course, with his unsportsmanlike behavior of throwing golf clubs, pounding them into the teebox and shouting obscenities is likely to become a bigger problem for him. He is a spoiled kid, destroyed by his wealth and fame, who thinks and behaves like he is entitled to do as he pleases. Just because he is a phenomenal athlete does not negate the fact that he should behave in a respectable manner on the golf course. I think he got a little taste of the fact that people are getting tired of him because he is not a charming young man anymore.

Looks like scoobydude just ran off the reservation. What has Cal fans boing Tiger have to do with your obvious hatred for the guy. They didn’t boo him because of what you wrote here which has no relevance whatsoever except to show your bias in trying to justify it. Other posters correctly pointed out why some Cal fans booed him: he was wearing Stanford red and so was as good a target as any other red out there. Doesn’t justify it but can explain it. Yours just doesn’t even come close except to expose your prejudice towards a successful guy who has earned the right to be admired by many.
Nobody is loved 100% but you don’t hate somebody for being successful and look for an opportunity to stick it to him or her which is exactly what you did here. I’m certain some of Cal fans will cheer if they were watching golf and Tiger made an unbelievably nifty play.

Tiger Woods is a stuck up little twit. He couldn’t carry Jack’s or Arnie’s or Gary’s or even Lee’s or Tom’s jockstrap. He has no competition, although Phil lately has come undone and began to kick dork arse.

This is truly a non-story after learning about Tiger’s accident early this a.m.
Here’s hoping he gets it all together, with beautiful family and marriage intact. Life is tough, folks, and you nay-sayers need to get another life if “booing” at a football game has significance to you.

Way to go! Tell it like it really is. Tiger is arrogant, condescending and I am not sure if he or Obama has the misplaced bigger ego.
Tiger has lots of money and absolutely no character that is visible. His language on an doff the course is legendary for being foul and racist – but the idiotic media just are blinded by the “stars” in their eyes.
Yes he is an athlete, but his lack of character tarnishes his accomplishments.
It is about time that Tiger realizes that the world – contrary to his own belief – DOES NOT revolve around Tiger Woods.

Champ 98. Wow, you found another message board to sport your racist drivel. This article is like the ones printed in the British Tabloid; The Sun. Overblown and not true.
Tiger will always have more class in his little finger than you have in your entire miserable racist life.
Get a life.
The article is crap. Just crap. And like one poster said, it is thirty seconds of my life I will never get back.

Tiger Woods didn’t graduate from Stanford. He’s smart enough to have graduated, but he took the money and ran when the pro golf tour beckoned. Jack Nicklaus did the same thing at Ohio State. I’ve never heard Tiger pay tribute to Stanford or suggest he was going back there some day to finish his education.
I suspect the people there resented Tiger’s being treated as an icon on campus. Other great athletes have stuck it out for the full four years.

So, what…Tiger needs to get that degree so he can be assured that he can a good paying job?
Hey lets face it, football fans if not the players are largely Neanderthals…(or is the the NBA…)
