Notre Dame fans have rational explanation for football failure: President Obama

Nov 23, 2009, 10:04 AM EDT

It’s no coincidence that the University of Connecticut beat Notre Dame in double overtime on Saturday, say some of the Fighting Irish faithful. The reason this happened is clear: President Obama made Touchdown Jesus cry.
The President, of course, spoke at the university’s May commencement; an act which angered many Catholics due to the controversies over Democratic views on abortion and stem cell research. And according to some commenters on a Notre Dame football message board, this has angered God, or something.

I apologize in advance for linking to a partisan political site like the Daily Kos: That kind of political peanut butter has no business getting into our sports chocolate. But in this case they did do the the legwork of sifting through the comments to find these examples, so credit where credit is due.
From the Rivals.com Notre Dame message board:

* After the ARROGANCE of Fr.Jenkins in awarding an Honorary Degree to the “Messiah”…despite loud, angry protests from the Alumni….let them sink…lower and lower and lower! — Jack from PA

* Typically a huge Notre Dame fan because they are such a unique and awesome institution. Since abortion loving Obama came to campus I could not care if they lose every game here on out. Stick to your roots Notre Dame!!!!!!!!!!! — bmcdermott70

* Well as least ND gave Obama an honorary degree. You really want to know what ND football problem is; lack of character, lack of identity. Even the University of Miami has an indentity; partying and getting laid. When one of the worlds most well known Catholic Universities honors a champion of abortion “rights”, they have betrayed the basic precepts on which they were founded. ND is an empty shell encrusted with rotting, empty tradition. Knute Rockne comming back from the grave couldn’t help this team win. Sad. — richarddennisjr1

* and that boys and girls is what happens when you let Obama speak at a Cathoilc university! — John R.

Not a lot of logic included with these; especially that last one, where we are led to believe that God tends to get very Old Testament when it comes to college football. Among other Notre Dame excuses on the board are “our admission requirements are too high” (hmm, doesn’t seem to be hurting Stanford this season), and “Charlie Weis is dumb.” By the way, the Obama comments are only four of more than 200 on the board so far, so let’s not paint all Golden Domers with the same brush.

Wingnuts: President Obama to blame for Notre Dame football woes [The Daily Kos]

Huh? What? Yo!Who are the intellects that are driven to express Notre Dame football collapsed due to God punishing the institution for the May 2009 conferral of a degree on Obama? Notre Dame was hammered way before this debacle happened last spring. Hence irregardless of priests sexually assaulting young boys, the Catholic Church losing members (like myself) due to its “mission” getting too out of touch with the members, and Catholic educational venues no longer fulfilling its purpose–God and Christ have seen fit to level condemnation on this football team. Absolutely amazing! I am not dismayed; I am flabbergasted that in our society there are individuals who are freely and willingly entertaing such a mindset. Yes! Several posters have truly denoted a mindset that is beyond rationalization. This discussion reinforced my decision to cut ties with the Vatican–if this is a “barometer” of the current mindset of American Catholicism it is on the skids.

Mr Bill Get a life. How about blaming it on the Sec. of no defense.
Politics and personal views have nothing to do with the last 13 years of ND football. I take that back maybe politics, the politics that force Lou Holtz out.

well that’s something new to me

Hey, at this point nothing would surprise me.
Chalk up the 2009 season to poor coaching? horrible execution? or God being pissed at ND for the Obama debacle?
Fact: pick one, pick all, pick none result is the same — what a disaster! Amen.

I know this may be harsh, but most of these catholics are clowns and hippocrytes anyway. First of all i am a Christian and voted democratic this time. People who call a human being Holy Father(the only Holy father is God the father(Jesus said their is none good but him), kisses a MAN’s (they kiss the popes ring) ring, ignores child molestation, covers up priest having kids with married or single women, worries more about being a good catholic than living by God’s word, uses abortion and fear as a tool to push their political agenda, likes the death penalty, likes war, likes theocracy, thinks that God cares about a football program, has a secret and in some instances violent history, tell people when and when they cannot take communion(Jesus didn’t give you that authority) The bible says let everyman examine himself when taking communion. As often as you do it, do it in rememberence of him(not the pope) , and last but not least; thinks GWB was somehow this holy and God fearing president just because he used you to get votes by giving you lip service about abortion…side note: the reps controlled all 3 branches of gov for the last 8 yrs and roe v wade hasn’t been overturned…GET IT. So in summary some of these self righteous catholics can’t tell me jack..

My father in-law made a joke that the baby better be a boy or not to bother telling him. I was so hurt! How do you even respond to comments like this?
