Minor League Hockey Coach Goes All Bobby Knight On Refs

Nov 11, 2009, 11:02 AM EDT

First of all, if your team is called the Louisiana IceGators, anything goes. By joining the diametrically opposed elements of an alligator and snow, you’ve already lost all credibility, and have made a mockery of the laws of nature. So why not have a coach who goes mental and starts throwing things onto the ice? And what the hell, let’s make him the general manager as well.
It all happened in the closing minute of the first period of the IceGators’ game with the Pensacola Ice Flyers in a South Professional Hockey League game in Pensacola on Friday. Brent Sapergia, who doubles as the IceGators’ interim coach and their general manager, was not amused with a couple of calls, and equipment-tossing hilarity ensued. Bonus: Rude finger gesture to ref as he exits the premises.

Final tally on stuff that Sapergia tossed: A water bottle, water cooler, two medical kits, helmet, two gloves, clipboard, and the team’s entire supply of hockey sticks.

“Obviously, it’s kind of funny to see something like that,” Ice Flyers goalie Chad Collins said of the tantrum. “But you have to stay focused on the game.”
